Why do people have to die of hunger while in the same state a lot of food is disposed by supermarkets, production facilities and restaurants because the demand on certain products was not as high as calculated? We, the Food Bank in Merida (Banco de Alimentos de Merida A.C.), give the mentioned facilities a break to donate these products and by distributing them we can contribute to decrease the amount of starving people in the Yucatan.
Still there are a lot of people starving or not able to meet their basic nutritional needs. 53% of the Mexican population is still poor. There is still not enough donated food for everyone. But TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, or at least start. For example by getting more facilities to donate, by increasing the amount of donations and by improving the quality of the donations during transport. There are still so many things to do.
We already have a lot of ideas how to solve all the problems, but unfortunately not everything can be solved just with manpower, we need money. For example we want to build a new warehouse and we need new forklifts. Then we would be able to store more donations and at the same time secure the quality of the products in order to try not to waste anything. In the end we are hopefully able to serve more starving people with donations and help them to survive.
The specialty of our food bank is that the donations are not just distributed arbitrary but we have nutritions that evaluate the status of each individual member of the institutions and communities to identify their requirements for a healthy life and a balanced diet. Each person gets exactly what he or she needs and so we can make sure that they are able to live a healthy and happy life.
