18,000 New Users Seek Sexual Health Information

By Eno-Obong Ekwere | Project Manager

Outreach for Girls in School, Niger State

It unbelievable, 18,000 new users have sought sexual and reproductive health information and counseling on our mobile technology platform in just 4 months.  The number of girls and boy new users are almost equal, with 54% male and 46% female. This large number shows us that our platform is filling a critical gap by providing adolescents and young people a means to ask sensitive and private questions about their health at their convenience. The project was able to reach this new users through new support we received.

Our team of counselors and volunteers went out to about 47 schools for young people in-school and 14 computer training and skill acquisition centers for those out of school.  During the awareness creation activities, adolescents and young people were engaged in classroom discussions, early morning health talks in their assemble halls, and they were shown how to use the service.  They were given opportunity to ask their questions and many were excited to use the service because the service is free.

"This is amazing! I never knew there was a service like this.  I love that I can send a text message and my answer is gotten immediately.  I just tried it now.  Best of all, it is free" - Amina 14 year old high school student.

Hearing the kind of message that Mercy sent to us, keeps us motivated to continue to provide the much needed support to adolescent and young people.  Now our team is trying to sustain the use of the service and we are presently developing messages to be sent as mass text messages to our new users.  These messages will motivate them to continue using the services whenever they have any health related concerns.
