Among threads and looms, the hands of our artisans sustain a millenary tradition, but they also face the physical wear and tear of a trade that demands endurance and dedication. Over time, problems such as back pain, muscle tension and fatigue have affected their well-being. For this reason, the Cojolya Health Program is an essential initiative to care for those who dedicate their lives to preserving the art of backstrap loom weaving and other artisanal processes.
This year, more than 30 artisans benefited from health cards that guarantee them access to medical care, check-ups and vitamins throughout the year. This assistance not only improves their physical health, but also brings peace of mind and stability to their families. While weaving is their economic livelihood, their well-being is also essential to continue working and passing on their art to new generations.
Artisans' Voices: Health as a Pillar of Textile Art
For those who have dedicated their lives to weaving and handicrafts, this program is much more than just access to health: it is recognition of their efforts and support for their well-being. Mercedes Cuá, an artisan from Cojolya, shares her gratitude: “Sometimes we forget that health is a fundamental part of our work. This support has allowed me to continue weaving without so much discomfort and with the security that I can be attended to if I need it. It is invaluable.
Maria Tiney has also felt the impact of this initiative: “I used to spend long hours knitting without a break, and over the years my body felt it. Having access to checkups and vitamins has made a big difference. Now I can continue with my craft without the constant fear of getting sick.”
Cojolya's health program not only improves the quality of life of those who participate in it, but also protects the cultural legacy of Santiago Atitlán. Without health, the textile art risks weakening over time. It is our responsibility to ensure that each artisan receives the care he or she deserves, so that this ancestral tradition continues to live on for generations. With your support, we can continue to strengthen the health and future of our community. Donate and be part of the change!
