A Story from Karamoja: Restoring Hope for Namoi
When Namoi became a mother at just 14, her dreams of finishing school seemed impossible. She dropped out, isolated and struggling to provide for her baby. Like many childmothers in Karamoja, she faced poverty, food insecurity, and stigma.
Through the Life Skills Project at HELPCHILD KARAMOJA’s centre, Namoi joined a tailoring course. At first, she was shy and uncertain. But with mentorship and psychosocial support, she began to thrive. Within six months, she could design and sew school uniforms, earning enough to feed her child and contribute to her household.
Her story is not unique. Over 3,800 childmothers, fathers, and disarmed youth are gaining employable skills—carpentry, hairdressing, agribusiness, and more. These trainings are not just about income; they restore dignity, build resilience, and reduce idleness that fuels instability.
Why This Matters to Donors
Immediate impact: Every skill learned translates into food on the table and a child back in school.
Longterm resilience: Families break cycles of poverty and dependency.
Community empowerment: Youth and parents become agents of peace and reconciliation.
