Occasionally the difference we make to someone’s life can be so easily accomplished. Many of MeRO's patients who are admitted to the Shelter have experienced major injury or illness, complex treatment, long recoveries and extensive rehabilitation. Goma’s medical journey however has been short and sweet in comparison.
Goma is 20. She had been diagnosed with a rare and painful skin condition in childhood and was receiving treatment. Her father died several years ago and since he passed away, she and her mother have been living in dire poverty in a mud shack with sacking for the door and windows. Medical care quickly became unaffordable and her skin condition became chronic and increasinglydistressing. Fortunately, a journalist who was recently working in the area noticed her and referred her to MeRO. She was admitted to the Shelter then hospitalised under the care of a multi-disciplinary team for wound care and a number of biopsies. Several medications and ointments later she already looks like a different person and has a smile on her face!
Goma will need ongoing treatment and sustained financial support to give her a real chance at recovery and plans for this are well underway.
