Fundacion Nacional Batuta works in the most vulnerable and conflict ridden areas of Colombia, providing children and youth with the opportunity to learn and practice music in a group setting which gives them a sense of place and a nurturing community. This project will fund one of our most urgent needs: instruments! Instruments are the cornerstone of our program and play a key role in teaching responsibility and ownership.
Today, more than 58,000 children and youth are survivors of Colombian conflict. They are vulnerable to recruitment into gangs and other armed groups, microtrafficking, and landmines. In order to address these risks, Batuta offers an alternative for the use of free time that is conducive to the building of social ties, community oriented values, and a sense of place. The program currently serves 43,000 at risk youth, with an understanding that music is a vehicle to transforming society
Batuta provides music training with an emphasis on community development. This project will provide much needed instruments to the most underserved regions of the country.
Batuta is more than just a music class. We offer a holistic and comprehensive program that addresses children, their families, and their greater communities. As Colombia prepares for the culmination of its peace accords, Batuta provides the social fabric that will allow the country to transition into peacebuilding. We will form a generation of youth that will be active members of society that recognize the importance of teamwork, resilience, and peaceful conflict resolution.
