Music Education for underprivileged School Kids

By Vivek Sadasivam | Head of Special Projects

The children of Government Higher Primary School, Immadihalli, were keenly observing the instrument that SaPa's Associate Dean Ambi Subramaniam was holding. When asked what instrument it was, they were quick to reply that it was a violin. Some even asked where he had hidden the bow and how he was planning on playing it, without the bow. There was a smile on their face when he revealed it from within the case. Knowing that most of these children had a difficult time at home and in the society, that for them the next meal was more important than what the Indian cricket team's score was, it was indeed heartening to see that they could recognise it.

We watched as the SaPa in Schools teacher, Thyagaraja was greeted by the students as he entered a Grade 2 class. Not having gone in with high expectations, we were in for a pleasant surprise when we noticed how attentive the children were to the teacher and how much they enjoyed singing the melodies and performing musical activities. Surprise turned to amazement as they nonchalantly broke into Jambo Bwana, an African folk song which they learnt as part of their global music component. The sheer joy on the faces of the kids was an unforgettable sight. If one could bring an hour of happiness in these childrens' life, it is immensely satisfying. A group of kids even answered a resounding 'Yes!' when asked by SaPa's Dean Bindu Subramaniam if they liked SaPa class the best! Anitha, a middle school student said that learning music in school from SaPa has helped her be more confident and sing immediately to her friends when asked. Principal Shivamma observed that music had improved concentration of the kids in other subjects as well!

The SaPa in Schools program has aimed to provide quality music education in schools, irrespective of caste, creed, gender or race. It gives special joy to be able to touch lives of the underprivileged with music, one of the finest art forms. We have been extremely fortunate that schools have embraced our music education curriculum and the methodology. We have, as promised been able to provide music education completely free of cost to around 500 students in the Government Schools of Whitefield, Bangalore adding to the 1000+ students already receiving it in other locations. SaPa in Schools is not just a project, it is a movement! With all the love and support already received from all your contributions, we are looking forward to the continued support be able to reach many more kids all over the country!
