PACI'S DREAMS ARE BIGGER THAN HER DIAGNOSIS.

By Dr Pasquine Ogunsanya | Project Leader

At 19, *Paci* is not only a student but also a school head girl (a senior female student who is chosen to act as the chief student leader or lead prefect of a school), a young leader with ambitions to contribute to public health and a future she is determined to create.
A client of Alive Medical Services, Paci sees herself as more than a young lady who was born with HIV. She is already learning what it means to lead, inspire, and dream beyond the circumstances of her life. As a student and the current head girl of her school, she carries responsibilities that extend beyond the classroom. She is a role model to her fellow students, balancing her academic ambitions with leadership while nurturing dreams that reach far beyond her school years.
For Paci, living with HIV is part of her story, but it is not the whole story. She sees herself as a young woman with possibilities, aspirations, and a future worth working towards.
Her interest in science and healthcare has inspired her ambition to pursue a career in Epidemiology and Public Health. She hopes to contribute to a future where HIV is no longer a life-threatening concern, where scientific research brings the possibility of a cure closer to reality, and where stronger health systems ensure that everyone can access quality healthcare regardless of their circumstances.
“When I always come here to the facility, I always imagine myself wearing the white coat while I get to serve, do research, and empower other vulnerable people living with HIV.” Paci shares. It is an ambitious dream, and Paci believes it is achievable.
Beyond her professional aspirations, she also imagines a fulfilling personal life. She hopes to become a wife and mother someday, build a family and experience the many milestones that life has to offer. These are not distant or impossible dreams in her eyes; they are possibilities she looks forward to working towards.
However, achieving these ambitions requires more than determination. It requires consistent healthcare, access to medication, support, and an environment that allows her to grow into the person she hopes to become.
This is where Alive Medical Services plays an important role in her journey. Through access to free HIV medication and integrated healthcare services, Paci is supported to manage her health and continue with her everyday life. The availability of treatment means she can focus on her education, participate in school activities, take up leadership responsibilities, and plan for the future without having to navigate her health alone.
Today, Paci's story is not simply about a young person living with HIV; it is about a student who wants to excel academically, a school leader discovering her potential, a future public health professional who hopes to contribute to better health outcomes, and a young woman who looks forward to building a family of her own someday.
Her ambitions remind us that young people living with HIV have dreams that extend into every aspect of life. They want to study, lead, build careers, fall in love, raise families, and contribute meaningfully to society. An HIV status should never limit the possibilities they can imagine or pursue.
Through GlobalGiving’s support, Alive Medical Services continues to provide accessible, client-centered integrated HIV/SRHR care and stories like Paci's reinforce why sustained investment in healthcare matters. Behind every treatment appointment and every dose of medication is a person with ambitions, relationships, and a future they deserve to experience.
