Thanks to your generous support and donations, ADVCL was able to provide advocacy and referrals to 33 survivors (21 of whom were new callers) from or on behalf of 28 different families (19 of whom were new) in March 2009. We received 93 calls, emails and faxes from 14 different countries.
In March 2009, ADVCL also expanded its global reach and received calls from three new countries: Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, and Nicaragua. An important part of ADVCL’s mission is to reach survivors around the world and let them know they are not alone.
Also in March, ADVCL provided relocation assistance to two families. Many survivors overseas are physically and financially isolated, and sometimes forced to flee without their children. In March, ADVCL reunited a mother with her four children whom she was forced to leave behind in the Middle East in order to escape to the US. We also assisted a mother with having visitation with her daughter who, because of a custody hearing, remains in Europe.
Finally, a client who has an ongoing international family law case wrote the following message to our Crisis Line Advocate Caitlin McGuan:
“I cannot tell you how much your support and guidance has meant to me. This has been the most harrowing experience of my life. I know that this is a long way from over, but I now will have an intelligent person sitting next to me in court. The thought of representing myself was heart stopping, especially knowing that my husband would be sitting there glaring at me the whole time, just wishing I'd screw up - which of course I would have. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for all your help. I don't think I would have made it without you. You pushed me further than I could have gone by myself and I will be eternally grateful to you. The service you provide is invaluable and I'll pray that the Lord watches over you for the rest of your life.”

ADVCL also received calls from three new countries in the first quarter: Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, and Nicaragua. In March, ADVCL provided relocation assistance to two families.
ADVCL has created two new projects: the first is to assist American survivors of domestic violence overseas with relocation assistance. Battered American women who are abused in foreign countries by their partners often feel they have no choice but to flee back to the U.S. for the protection of themselves, and their children, in their search for safety. This is partly due to the barriers they face in the foreign countries including language, culture, and restrictive marital and child custody laws. Additionally, resources available in the foreign country are often non-existent and if there are some available, they are generally inadequate. Most often survivors say they feel the U.S. will have the most inclusive legal protection for them and their children. ADVCL helps with the logistics of relocation, danger to safety planning, and assistance with emergency needs. The second project focuses on assisting children of domestic violence survivors. In 2008, ADVCL provided services to 239 families with at total of 448 children in 56 different countries. We just completed our first 30 hour international crisis line advocate training of 2009! After completion of the training, advocates commit to a minimum of 1 year, six hours per week on the crisis line, or 312 hours. Most of our crisis line volunteers provide over 500 hours per year. The crisis line received 1182 calls or emails in 2008 from 56 different countries. Our volunteers are vital to the work we do. Because of their dedication and commitment, we are able to provide 24 hour service on the crisis line. We are always grateful for the financial support we receive through Global Giving because it enables us to conduct these trainings. We will be conducting 4 trainings this year, an increase from last year, and are planning our next one in May 2009.
With your valuable help in 2008 we received 1182 crisis calls & emails from 363 families (with 239 children) in 56 different countries. These crisis contacts came from:

In addition, we provided danger to safety relocation back to the USA to 7 families, provided legal representation to 6 families and provided housing to 4 families.
