Background of the Project
Maternal health
challenges remain a major concern among low-income families in Lugbe Community, Abuja. Many pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at AMAC Hospital experience financial difficulties in obtaining essential delivery materials required for safe childbirth and proper newborn care. The rising cost of living and limited economic opportunities have further increased the burden on vulnerable pregnant women, especially widows, single mothers, and women from low-income households.
In response to this need, the Community Volunteers and Support Team organized a humanitarian outreach project aimed at providing delivery items to pregnant women receiving antenatal care at AMAC Hospital. The initiative was designed to support maternal health, reduce financial stress on expectant mothers, and promote safe delivery practices within the community.
Objectives of the Project
General Objective
To support pregnant women attending AMAC Hospital by providing essential delivery items that will improve maternal care and promote safe childbirth.
Specific Objectives
To provide delivery materials to vulnerable pregnant women attending antenatal care at AMAC Hospital.
To support low-income pregnant women who cannot afford essential delivery items.
To promote maternal and newborn health through humanitarian support.
To encourage compassion and community participation in supporting vulnerable mothers.
To strengthen collaboration between volunteers and healthcare providers in maternal healthcare interventions.
Beneficiaries
The project directly benefited 20 pregnant women attending antenatal care at AMAC Hospital, Lugbe Community. The beneficiaries included:
Low-income pregnant women
First-time mothers
Widows and single mothers
Pregnant women with limited family support
These women were identified as vulnerable and in need of assistance during pregnancy and childbirth.
Items Distributed
The following delivery items were distributed to the beneficiaries:
Baby clothes
Baby diapers
Maternity pads
Dettol and antiseptics
Baby soap and lotion
Tissue paper
Towels and wrappers
Disposable gloves
Buckets and toiletries
Each beneficiary received a carefully packaged delivery support kit containing essential items needed for childbirth and newborn care.
Implementation Process
The project was implemented through the following stages:
Needs Assessment
The team engaged with healthcare workers and antenatal coordinators at AMAC Hospital to identify vulnerable pregnant women and determine the most needed delivery materials.
Mobilization
Pregnant women were informed about the outreach program during antenatal clinic sessions with the assistance of hospital staff and volunteers.
Procurement and Packaging
Delivery items were purchased, sorted, and packaged in preparation for distribution.
Distribution Exercise
The distribution exercise took place at AMAC Hospital during an antenatal clinic session. The beneficiaries received the delivery items in an orderly, transparent, and well-coordinated manner.
Monitoring and Supervision
Volunteers and healthcare workers supervised the process to ensure accountability, fairness, and proper distribution of the items.
Impact of the Project
The outreach project had a positive impact on both the beneficiaries and the community:
Twenty (20) pregnant women received essential delivery materials to support safe childbirth and newborn care.
The project reduced financial pressure on vulnerable expectant mothers.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation and encouragement for continued maternal support initiatives.

Challenges Encountered
Despite the success of the project, some challenges were encountered:
Limited financial resources restricted the number of pregnant women that could be reached.
Transportation and logistics challenges during the movement of items.
High demand from additional pregnant women who also required support.
Recommendations
To improve future interventions, the following recommendations are proposed:
Increase funding and donations to enable support for more pregnant women.
Establish partnerships with NGOs, donors, healthcare institutions, and community-based organizations.
Organize regular maternal support outreaches in hospitals and communities.
Expand future interventions to include maternal health education, nutrition support, and postnatal care assistance.
