Dear Sponsors,
This report starts with some very sad news. We recently had to say goodbye to our beautiful cheetah, Crunchie.
Crunchie suffered a stroke and, despite everything we tried, his condition did not improve. Together with our wildlife veterinarian, Dr Peter Rogers, we eventually had to make the difficult decision to let him go peacefully. Crunchie was a very special part of DAKTARI and will be deeply missed by all of us.
Dr Peter Rogers has been caring for DAKTARI’s animals since our very first days, and this November we are doing something very special together! On Friday 13 November, Peter will share stories from his incredible career as a wildlife vet during a fundraising evening for DAKTARI. And the good news for our international friends is that you don’t need to be in South Africa to join us! The evening will be livestreamed, so wherever you are in the world, you can listen to Peter’s stories and support DAKTARI at the same time. Tickets for the livestream are only R300 (around €17 / $19). Book your ticket on this link and read more details about the event.
Back at DAKTARI, we are also very happy to have welcomed Jack from the UK as our new Animal Manager. He has already been busy making plans for a bigger enclosure for our snakes. Thanks to plenty of good food and care, they have grown... a lot! So now it is time to give them some extra space to enjoy.
And finally, some very cute news to finish this update: we have baby guinea pigs! They are doing well and, as you can imagine, getting plenty of attention.
Through the happy moments and the difficult ones, caring for our animals remains a very important part of life at DAKTARI. Thank you for helping us give them the best life and care possible.
If you or someone would like to come and volunteer with us here in the bush under the African sun, please read more about volunteering at DAKTARI on this link .
Warm wishes,
The DAKTARI Team
