Dear Sponsors,
Life at DAKTARI has settled back into its normal rhythm after the heavy flooding earlier this year. While we continue planning the reconstruction of our bridge before the next rainy season, our rescued animals remain our daily priority.
Recently, our veterinarian, Dr Peter Rogers, visited DAKTARI to examine Telo after we noticed he seemed uncomfortable. He had developed an ingrown claw, which was successfully treated. We are happy to report that he has recovered well and is back to his usual relaxed self.
Our Animal Manager and the team are always looking for new ways to keep our animals mentally stimulated. One of the latest enrichment activities was prepared for our cheetah, Crunchie. We set up a cable system that allows pieces of meat to slide through his enclosure, encouraging him to chase his food as he would in the wild. Unfortunately, Crunchie had other ideas. He watched the moving meat for a while, decided it was far too much effort, and waited for his meal to come to him instead!
As winter arrives in South Africa, we are preparing for more wildlife to visit the waterhole just outside our camp. During the dry season, many natural water sources disappear, making permanent waterholes especially important. Our team recently cleaned and cleared the area so it is ready for the many wild visitors we hope to welcome over the coming months, including zebras, buffalo, giraffes, porcupines and even hyenas.
Every season brings different challenges and different rewards, but one thing never changes: our commitment to providing the best possible care for the animals that call DAKTARI home while inspiring children to value and protect wildlife.
Thank you for making this work possible. Your continued support helps us care for our resident animals every single day.
If you would like to experience life at DAKTARI yourself, or know someone who would enjoy volunteering with us, you can learn more by clicking HERE. We have open slots for volunteering in September, October and November - and our animals are curious to meet you!
With heartfelt appreciation,
The DAKTARI Team
