Dear Friends,
The last 3 months have been extremely busy but exciting months. In April we started building the enclosure for the 2 lions, Duma and Telo who are brothers. After many long days of hard work, the enclosure was finally completed, approved by Nature Conservation and we were ready to receive the boys!
Duma and Telo were found as abandoned cubs and hand raised. They are now too used to humans to be safely rehabilitated into the wild which unfortunately happens in most of the cases. They were looked after by the Moholoholo Team who already has too many lions that can’t be rehabilitated. They kindly offered us the opportunity to welcome them which we gladly accepted.
It was an exciting, long and somewhat stressful day transporting the boys to their new home, but once the trailer door was opened and they gingerly stepped out, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Duma and Telo immediately started to explore and within a few hours they had settled down into their much larger and more comfortable home. They are both very happy and spend their days lazing in the sun and the evenings after their supper, roaring up a storm.
Besides welcoming the two lions at DAKTARI, we also received a Serval by the name of SCRUFFBALL, and he has settled into his new home fully and seems to be extremely happy. Scruffball was also reared as a pet and therefore could not be rehabilitated into the wild, and we gladly agreed to have him join our family.
Surprisingly, the majority of the children we receive have never seen a lion or the elusive Serval before, so this gives us at DAKTARI the chance to instill both a sense of pride and awe in them when seeing these beautiful animals.
The addition of Duma, Telo, and Scruffball have given the local children a broader opportunity to learn about the wildlife and environment around them, as well as given the volunteers the chance to ignite a sense of passion and responsibility for their environment and country.
The lions and Serval are quickly becoming ambassadors for their species and watching the children filled with awe and eager to learn is greatly satisfying.
Thank you for your ongoing support
Take care and stay safe
