Assessment Impact.
The post-distribution assessment conducted by Discover Organization shows that the food support provided to vulnerable households in Kakuma Refugee Camp made a meaningful and immediate impact on beneficiaries’ lives. During the period of support, families experienced improved access to food, with many reporting that they were able to eat regular meals without skipping. This significantly reduced the stress and uncertainty that households previously faced on a daily basis.
The support also contributed to the well-being of children and other vulnerable members of the household. Beneficiaries reported that children became more active, healthier, and better able to concentrate in school. In addition, families were able to preserve their limited resources, as they did not need to sell personal belongings or engage in negative coping mechanisms to survive.
However, the assessment also revealed that the positive impact was largely temporary. After the food support ended, many households quickly returned to a state of food insecurity. Due to limited income opportunities and ongoing reductions in humanitarian assistance, families continue to struggle to meet their basic needs. Some have resumed skipping meals, reducing portion sizes, or relying on unsustainable coping strategies.
This assessment highlights two important realities: first, that targeted food assistance is highly effective in providing immediate relief and restoring dignity; and second, that there is a continued and urgent need for sustained support. Without ongoing intervention, vulnerable households remain at high risk of falling deeper into crisis.
These findings reinforce the importance of continued food support, as well as the need to combine emergency assistance with long-term solutions such as livelihood and income-generating programs to ensure lasting impact.
