Good progress is now being made and there are now clear signs of improvement everywhere. Government bureaucracy has delayed starts, but for good reason, to ensure that new public buildings confirm to earthquake resileance standards. After such a devastating earthquake the workload facing government and its officials was overwhelming. The important issue was to try and ensure that such a disaster can never happen again on such a scale.
The Nepal Trust is pleased to announce that The Goraknath Primary school in Tarkegjang village Helambu is now well under construction. Winter has arrived and, at this elevation, conditions can be quite severe so work has slowed down a bit but all is still on schedule. Foundations are in place and most of the reinforced concrete pillars have been erected. The new school will be fully compliant with all government earthquake resileance regulations. For now the children continue their education in the Temporary Learning Centres erected very soon after the disaster so the children have not had to suffer much of a disruption from their normal education.
The Kiul irrigation scheme is now complete and providing clean water for over 1200 people. Its other prime purpose is to provide a steady supply of irrigation water for farm crops and ensure that agricultural production can get back to normality and provide food and income and a healthy, wealthier future.
As the weather improves work will speed up and by our next report we should really see some light at the end of the tunnel!
Thank you to all our supporters for all your contributions to this project. It is slowly turning around the lives of these devastated mountain people who had little to start with and have even less now. You are helping them to climb that ladder to a better life but it is always the first rung that is the most difficult. We hope you can tell your friends about us and maybe encourage them to give their support.
A belated Merry Christmas to you and all the very best for 2017.
