Summary

The project will provide specialized services for six months to 100 low-income children aged 0 to 6 in Mexico City who have high neurological risk of triggering a disability due to birth conditions. APAC's Detection and Early Intervention program helps reduce or prevent long-term physical damage, make timely diagnoses and initiate rehabilitation treatments. The program has treated more than 1000 children. Of those, 500 have been integrated into conventional early childhood programs and schools.

Challenge

One of the leading reported causes of disabilities in Mexico are birth conditions and complications. In fact, 10% of infants in the country present an alteration in development. There is very little information available on the importance of early intervention, and the lack of access to specialized health services impede true monitoring of babies.

Solution

In 2007, APAC launched the Detection and Early Intervention program, aimed at kids aged 0-6 with high neurological risk of triggering a disability. Enrolled beneficiaries are assessed to create an individualized work plan, and receive specialized services from our in-house specialists, including rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutrition, hydrotherapy, and neuropsychology.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide specialized and personalized services for 100 children in Mexico City living under the poverty line, aged 0-6 with high neurological risks of developing a disability, for one year. With this intervention, we will be able to reduce or prevent long-term physical damage, make a timely diagnosis to start treatment, and incorporate at least 50 of the beneficiaries into conventional early childhood programs and classrooms.
