Dear WealthyGen Supporters,
Through your generous donations, WealthyGen is close to fully setting up two widows with sustainable livelihood activities they have chosen and that we have assessed them as having the skills and capabilities to run successfully.
Our Women Empowerment Project (WE Project) kicked off with two widows.
The first beneficiary is from in Ukpo in Anambra State Nigeria. She has 7 children. Because she does not have any source of livelihood, she is not able to enroll her kids in school, and some are given out to live as housemaids with other families without possibilities of receiving any education. This is our #UkpoProject
The second widow is from Jos, Plateau State Nigeria. She has 4 kids. She is also struggling to fight poverty and feed her children, who have already been withdrawn from school. This is our #JosProject.
WealthyGen implements its WE Project in three (3) components:
Financial Literacy and Inclusion: WealthyGen began the #UkpoProject by providing personal finance training to enhance her financial literacy skills and introduce her to the use of formal financial services. During this training, we discovered that the widow and her children had no food and no hopes of anything to eat. This required immediate intervention and could not wait till the completion of the project. WealthyGen intervened, and supplied food items worth fifty thousand naira (N50000); an equivalent of $142. This supply can last the family for up to 2 months.
With hunger problem taken care of, WealthyGen opened a savings account for her to begin to use formal financial services and put the newly learned money management skills into practice.
Support Fund: The savings account was opened with a Support Fund of twenty thousand Naira (N20,000) equivalent of $57. This will continue to put food on her table until the business/activity she will establish takes off successfully.
Enterprise Development: The preliminary interview / screening reveals her passion and talent for hairdressing. Rather than opening a typical hair-dressing salon (fully equipped with the tools and supplies to help her succeed) as we offered, she chose to focus on hair braiding and would rather do this among her fellow women in the market and as part of a union of hair braiders. WealthyGen is in the process of registering her with the union by paying the dues and purchasing all the items required to gain full membership and secure a braiding spot in the market among the other women. We are also purchasing all the supplies needed to help her succeed in using her talent for hair-braiding to provide better life for herself and her children.
The second beneficiary - #JosProject
The preliminary screening for #JosProject reveals her entrepreneurial skills and passion for retail sales of food items. Hence, we kicked off her empowerment project by securing a retail store space and paid the rent for one year. The store costs twenty-five thousand naira (N25,000), equivalent of $71. WealthyGen is currently purchasing all the marketable products to equip the store with. We will also be completing the financial literacy and inclusion component and provide support fund.
We will provide full report of these projects when they are fully completed.
