For an elderly woman living through crisis, a simple meal can mean getting through another day without hunger. Many older women in Nigeria have little or no income to depend on and may struggle to afford food. Nigeria is facing a serious food crisis, with 35 million people projected to face acute food insecurity in 2026, according to UNFPA. This project will provide a week of food to elderly women who are struggling to survive.
Hunger is becoming a daily struggle for millions of Nigerians. WFP reports that 35 million people are projected to face acute food insecurity in 2026, while 2.3 million people remain displaced by violence in the northeast. For an elderly woman with little income, no steady support and rising food costs, missing meals can become a painful reality. Some may go to bed hungry simply because there is nothing left to eat.
The project will provide food packages directly to elderly women facing hunger and crisis. Each package will contain enough food to help a woman eat for a week, reducing the immediate pain of going without meals. Women with the greatest need will be identified through local community contacts, and support will be delivered to them. Donor support will turn into food on the table when an elderly woman has nowhere else to turn.
Providing food to elderly women can help reduce repeated periods of hunger among women who have little income or family support. Regular food assistance can help them maintain their strength and avoid the painful choice between eating and meeting other basic needs. As more donors support the project, more elderly women facing crisis can receive food during their hardest days.
