At Orchid Garden Nepal, young girls come to school everyday but are facing sexual abuse in the home. In some cases the parents are working until late evening and the abuse is at the hands of neighborhood boys, in the most extreme cases, it is a family member. We noticed grades falling off considerably when this began and have now moved some of these girls to a hostel where they can be safe. We need support to continue to provide a safe place for these young girls to live.
Growing up in the slums of Kathmandu, it is often young women who are most effected, often not allowed to attend school because they are sent to work. Orchid Garden Nepal provides these girls with a wonderful early education and ensures that they continue to go to school by paying for them to attend school from grade 2 on. Despite the education, many girls must face dangers after school has ended when they are home alone waiting for parents to return.
A hostel for girls will provide a safe environment in which the girls can learn and grow. The girls housed in the dormitory will range from age eight to eighteen and are all students from The Orchid Garden Nepal. Giving the girls a safe place to go after school where they are cared for in the afternoon and evening will not only keep them physically safe but will also encourage them to learn and will break the cycle of poverty and invest in the bright future of the girls and women of Nepal.
To begin, fifteen to seventeen girls will be given a place to live in the dormitory in the vicinity of the Orchid Garden free of charge to their families. OGN will continue to pay for the girls to attend school (if they have finished grade one). The girls will be provided with a roof over their heads and two meals per day as well as clothing and other supplies. These girls will be encouraged to focus on their studies and will be given an education they would not otherwise have access to.
