Thanks donors for hanging in there with FAVL! We continue to make lots of efforts to supply the 34 librries in Burkina Faso with new reading materials. Last month we printed and distributed 15 new photo books. They mostly feature residents of the village communities where the libraries are located. They can be viewed at our marketplace at fastpencil.com. A couple of covers are included here. Kids really like these books, and they are written in fairly simple French.
After our last delivery of books in May to Niankorodougou library, we purchased 46 African novels for older readers in the library of Mané (receipt attached). We have not had a recent purchase of children's books but will do so in the coming months.
Here are some of the highlights of FAVL activities in recent months (you can read more on our blog):
Burkina Faso
- Summer reading camps held in 22 villages (June and July 2017)
- 15 photos books printed and distributed (these feature people in local communities where libraries are located)
- Two new program officers hired and trained
- Mayors in 22 village sites held meetings with FAVL representative to ensure payment of librarian salaries
- A typical library receives 200 visits a month
Ghana
- After school reading program initiated August 2017
- Coordinator Paul Ayutoliya visited libraries in Accra and purchased 115 books for Sumbrungu, Sherigu and Kunkua libraries
- Libraries receive several thousand visits each month
Uganda
- Uganda Community Libraries Association held in August 2017 its annual conference
- Kitengesa Library is thriving

Latest book purchase - for Niankorodougou library
By Michael Kevane | FAVL Director, West Africa

Thanks to all the new and continuing donors for purchasing quality children's books for the libraries in Burkina Faso. Earlier today (May 12) our national representative, Sanou Dounko, was able to purchase 45 children's books at a cost of 100.000 FCFA (about $200) for the community library of Niankorodougou. These books are very typical of the works of Fatou keita which are much appreciated by young village readers. Niankorodougou library sees about 20 visits a day to the library and checks out 100+ books each month. The librarian salary is now covered by the office of the mayor. The books will be delivered in coming days to Niankorodougou. Thanks for your help!!!

books purchased for libraries
Just yesterday we submitted a report on the GlobalGiving project, and in checking the accounts we realized that we *did* purchase $200 worth of children's books for distribution to libraries. The purchase was mentioned in a FAVL blog post:
http://www.favl.org/blog/archives/2016/09/achat-de-livres-de-jeunesse-pour-les-bibliotheques-de-favl.html
These books will be distributed later this week, since we are planning another $200 purchase tomorrow, and so early next week we will update. As the photo below makes clear, there is a range of children's books published in West Africa available in the two main bookstores of Ouagadougou, Librarie de la Jeuness and L'Harmattan. Included in the books purchased are picture books and also young adult short novels.
