A Journey of Recovery

By Hannah Thirananthasombun | Project Coordinator

In mid-2025, the HUG Project intervened to support a 17-year-old girl whose life was upended after her private images were circulated online. Seeking legal accountability, the survivor entered the justice process, filing a formal report with local authorities. This led to a successful police search and investigation; however, the legal victory was only the beginning of a long journey toward healing.

The incident sent shockwaves through the survivor’s life. Suddenly, the simple acts of attending school or socializing became impossible. The trauma took a severe toll on her mental health, causing her pre-existing depression to spiral into self-harming behaviors and suicidal ideation.

At home, the strain created frequent conflicts with her guardians. Caught in a cycle of stress and anxiety, the family found themselves unable to see a way forward or plan for the future.

Upon assessment, the HUG Project social workers launched a multi-disciplinary intervention designed to wrap the survivor in professional support:

  • Psychological Intervention: We provided expert counseling to evaluate and care for her emotional and behavioral development. The focus was on building emotional resilience, managing extreme stress, and navigating the aftermath of her experiences.

  • Integrated Medical Care: For the first two months, the survivor attended weekly sessions for close monitoring. This was done in coordination with hospital psychiatrists to ensure a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to her mental health.

  • Family Strengthening: We continuously monitored and counseled the guardians, helping them reduce their own stress and learn how to effectively care for a child living with depression.

As the survivor showed steady improvement, we worked with the family to adapt her daily life. This included transitioning her to online learning and encouraging her to join vocational training and sports activities to boost her social adjustment.

After seven months of continuous support, the results are clear. The survivor’s quality of life has significantly improved. The symptoms of depression have stabilized, and the behaviors of self-harm have ceased. She is now able to plan her education and participate in activities that align with her interests.

With her recovery well underway, sessions have been adjusted to twice a month. Our team of psychologists and social workers have scheduled two final follow-up visits to ensure she feels confident moving forward. While we prepare to conclude our formal services, the HUG Project will remain a constant resource for the family, ensuring that the path they have built together remains strong.

Your generous and continued support is what allows us to continue providing these invaluable resources to survivors of sexual abuse, making stories of recovery like this one possible.
