At its inception, Mama Dragons moms met in person for coffee with other mothers of LGBTQ+ kids to talk about shared values and their hopes and dreams for their families. The community of women grew by word of mouth and to be added to the Facebook groups, you needed to have met a Mama Dragon in person and been invited to join.
Here we are, a decade later, and we have over 13,000 mothers who have joined over 50+ private Mama Dragons Facebook groups that reflect the diversity of our experiences across cultural, political and geographical differences as well as shared identities in faith, race and gender.
With growth like this, it has tested our capacity as a volunteer driven organization and there have been growing concerns about the safety of our group on a public space like Facebook.
Recently, I've spent months creating a new space for Mama Dragons on a new private, network that is off Facebook. In doing so, I've had the chance to go through archived materials and have learned so much about the deep history of Mama Dragons as well as the incredible women who have carried this to this point.
We opened the doors to our new Mama Dragons network on January 1, 2025. This virtual community center assures that Mama Dragons can communicate more freely, offer more life-affirming classes and provide more connection in a time when people are being more protective of their families.
One thing that Mama Dragons does so well is reaching back to help the new mothers beginning their journey of creating affirming homes. And we will continue doing just that. We are creating more opportunities for getting together with like-minded Mamas over coffee - whether in person or virtually. This is where those connections and deep conversations sustain us and show that we aren't alone.
We are also beginning a national outreach project to bring more mothers of LGBTQ+ children who are new to this path and need the support, education and empowerment that Mama Dragons can offer.
Your support of our work is fulfilling the cycle of understanding that is passed from one mother to the next via our programs centered on creating affirming homes and happy, thriving LGBTQ+ children.
