The 72 hectares of mangrove forest in Rincón del Mar play a vital role in ensuring the wellbeing and safety of this coastal community. These mangroves act as CO2E sinks, prevent flooding, protect locals from storms, reduce erosion and provide key breeding grounds for fish; a vital food source, commercial product for local fisherman, driver of tourism and key pillar of Rincón’s cultural heritage.
For this reason, E2E has been committed to helping protect and restore Rincón’s mangrove ecosystem, which faces threat due to the lack of government waste management, scarce community resources and uncontrolled urban expansion.
Since February 2017, we have been partnering up with CARSucre, the regional environmental body to carry out hydrological restorations of the mangroves’ lagoon.
We have also been busy setting up environmental education programs which stress the importance of the mangrove ecosystem, in addition to community-led law enforcement groups which work around the clock to prevent the dumping of waste into the mangrove forests.
Each month, we are progressing towards our target of planting 60,000 mangrove saplings… an effort which would restore 20 hectares of forest. To achieve these, we are collaborating with Fundación MIMA and Eduardoño, a private company based in Medellín.
Despite having successful results on a small-scale, community-led level, we still need a larger financial investment in order to fully recover the area we are working on.
