Mangrove forests one of the most valuable ecosystems in the world. Unfortunately, in Rincón del Mar, like many coastal and marine ecosystems, the mangrove forests are being lost at an extremely rapid rate.
Furthermore, in Rincón del Mar, on the coast of Sucre, almost the entire native population lives below the poverty line. These two outstanding factors, among other difficult issues in Rincón del Mar, motivated E2E to work with the townspeople of Rincón del mar to develop the project "Mangroves of my Heart", a commnunity-driven and led conservation program that will protect mangrove ecosystems, provide jobs and create a more resilient community in Rincón del Mar.
Based on the FAO Framework, “Income for Coastal Communities for Mangrove Protection” (13) and on the recommendations from the Center for Global Development for Performance Payments to slow climate change (14), this project has three main goals:
1) Completely protect and preserve the 45 hectares of mangroves directly around the urban area of Rincon del Mar and the approximately 470 hectares in the surrounding territory.
2) Restore the mangroves around Rincón del Mar based on soil organic and biomass carbon stock measurements.
3) Provide the community with economic and social incentives to protect the local environment.
This project trains local community to protecto and restore mangrove forests, thereby restoring their critical ecosystem services that the town needs to survive. The trained community members then take carbon stock measurements to ensure restoration and conservation goals are being achieved. If the mangroves improve, E2E will give a series of community projects to the town as a reward for cooperating with conservation. Potential projects include:
This project has passed through initial project design and execution phases and still requires full funding of $38,000 USD before further action can be taken. The urgency for these funds grows greater every day-- and we need your help to change the future of Rincón del Mar before it is too late.
