An update on the endangered southwest willow flycatcher

By Kate Huey | Conservation Intern

Hello Friend,

I am excited to share that we are continuing our work to protect the endangered southwest willow flycatcher! Throughout the last year, we have continued monitoring transects and conducting surveys of the birds. We have found an association with the land we are protecting and an increase in bird diversity.

Given that this species has had less than 1000 breeding pairs and is especially vulnerable to wetland degradation, livestock grazing, habitat loss; it is critical and uplifting to hear that your support has helped them continue to survive. This success extends to the health of the ecosystem as well. The areas that we monitor and protect near Lake Olomega also bolster 196 unique species of birds.

The data that we have collected has given us a long term baseline for evaluating future changes in the willow flycatcher winter distribution and habitat use, identified key wetlands for conservation, and improved understanding of habitat associations.

In the future, we hope to continue to monitor the birds and use this data to support habitat conservation and management in eastern El Salvador as well as continue to strengthen our connection to the local community through the participation of biology students and park rangers.

Thank you again for your support of these precious birds! I look forward to giving more updates in the future.

Best,

Kate Huey
