Willow flycatchers wintering near water

Wintering willow flycatcher - so pretty!
Wintering willow flycatcher - so pretty!

Dear Friend,

This is just a note to express our gratitude to you for your generous support for our willow flycatcher program which works to understand wintering willow flycatchers to to protect the habitat of this threatened species and that of other migratory birds.

In the last two months during our monitoring we have located willow flycatchers at each of the three sites. Though the numbers are low at each site (5-7 individuals at each location), we anticipate that the numbers will increase in January when the later arrivers appear. At one location north of the capital city of Managua, we resighted an individual banded in 2018 by the Southern Sierra Research Station. Hurray!

We are excited to share that we will be soon doing field work to search identify willow flycatchers in El Salvador at protected areas. Your support and that of the Arizona Game and Fish Department will help us to identify protected areas where this threatened species overwinters.

Finally, you support helps protect migratory and resident birds in other ways. For example earlier this month we celebrated our 8th Christmas Bird Count. During this day, children and volunteer birders helped observe species from across the isthmus. On that day, we recorded 175 species, a record for the count. This is perhaps an indicator that our birders skills have improved or could be sign that our habitat conservation effortst are helping to support a diversity of birds.

We are grateful to you for helping the birds. Thank you!

Warm regards,

Sarah
