Introduction;

Lebanon is facing a severe economic crisis that has deepened since 2019, impoverishing much of the population. The human rights situation worsened in 2023, marked by increased persecution of dissent and tighter restrictions on refugees.

 Following two months of conflict  a ceasefire was declared . Nabaa's survey identified over 2,700 displaced households, with many in emergency shelters or living with family. In mid-October, Nabaa, in collaboration with Save the Children International, assisted 1,440 families with essential supplies. A subsequent assessment in November found 975 families still displaced in Saida, with significant barriers to returning home due to safety concerns and uninhabitable conditions.

Child employment has recently increased as compared to the increase in the percentage of student failure at school, especially in the Palestinian community. This refers, first, to the bad economic situation of the employed children's families, which needs assistance in managing its economic issues. A second reason is the cultural inheritance of parents related to educating females and preferring them to quit school. A third reason is the teaching process followed in schools such as automatically passing children to the next grade level, that reaches to a level that a student finds himself/ herself in a progressive class when he/ she cannot even read or write. The student, then, faces educational challenges that causes him/ her to quit school, look for a job outside of school, or join the UNRWA training center, in case he/ she was accepted. The UNRWA training center is the only training center in Lebanon for Palestinians; Palestinian students usually cannot afford to the join the other training centers in Lebanon. This situation caused many children and young people to quit school and just stay jobless (simply staying at home or hanging out on streets or joining armed groups). The other ones have got employed even without learning how to practice a job; they used to do simple work and were abused by from their employers by receiving unfair pay for their working hours.

Main Achievements;

NABA’A has made significant progress in achieving its mission through its diverse programs. To successfully implement diverse projects, NABA’A not only partnered with local and international organizations, but also focused on capacity building initiatives for its staff. This enabled the organization to record a name of achievements.

  • For the first time, a group of children that raises awareness and leads advocacy campaigns regarding child labor was formed in Ein El Helwe camp. This made other children excited to express their feelings and participate in future campaigns.
  • Children forming CACs were chosen to represent Lebanon in the Global Gathering in Rwanda and were able to share with international NGOs the situation of children in Lebanon and their recommended solutions.
  • Strengthening the MANARA network yielded positive outcomes, transforming the network from being country based to becoming functional on a regional level with a clear list of roles and responsibilities.
  • The Emergency Program provided gravely needed relief services to desperate households in times of crisis, giving them a sense of security.
  • Girls on the verge of dropping out of school to get married were retained in education and women were provided with access to ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Youth were supported to gain new skills, have access to decent work opportunities, and get actively and positively engaged in community initiatives away from what could have become a self-destructive lifestyle.
  • During an unprecedented pandemic, over 2,596 people got registered on the national vaccination platform

Case Study;

B. S 15-year-old Palestinian Refugee, lives with his parents and six siblings in a two-room house. He dropped out before finishing elementary school and has since been spending most of his time with his father, an armed political party recruit. Financially, their living conditions are acceptable due to the father's income from the party. Before the project's implementation, B.S  was interested in following in his father's footsteps and getting involved in the armed party, as he believed this was the only way he could make money and live comfortably. However, the project encouraged him to enroll in vocational training, acquire new skills, and learn a new profession through which he could secure a job and live a decent life.
