Summary

This project will conduct monthly basis marine debris cleaning underwater and ghost gears cleaning for hot spot sites of marine biodiversity. Also, it will focus on the restoration and rehabilitation of marine ecosystems including coral reefs and seagrass bed through advocacy, legislation, and propagation actions.

Challenge

The project addresses the severe degradation of China's coastal marine ecosystems, specifically the loss of coral reefs and seagrass beds. These ecosystems face threats from climate change, marine debris, ghost gear, harmful organism outbreaks, and unsustainable human activities like fishing and tourism. The underlying problem is a lack of sustained public attention, insufficient long-term conservation investment, and a critical gap in scientific data needed for effective policy-making.

Solution

Through three pathways: (1) Citizen science - 9,764 divers conducted 1,125 debris cleanups, removing 13.76tons and publishing 75 monthly reports used by local governments. (2) Insite restoration - 1,820 coral fragments planted (80% survival); seagrass coverage increased 93%. (3) Public advocacy - 3.8billion online impressions and a network of 1,000+ volunteers.

Long-Term Impact

It builds a datadriven, replicable model for marine governance. Longterm datasets inform evidencebased policy (e.g., seagrass protection legislation advanced in 2025). Scalable restoration prototypes combine ecology with ecotourism. A permanent network of citizen scientists ensures sustained monitoring, early warning, and upstream prevention beyond onetime cleanups.
