This project will protect people with disabilities affected by conflict in Goma, Rutshuru, Nyiragongo, and Masisi from Ebola by providing accessible health information, adapted hygiene kits, protection services, and inclusive community awareness. It will strengthen the participation of organizations of persons with disabilities and improve access to prevention and response services for nearly 2,930 direct beneficiaries over six months.
People with disabilities living in conflict-affected communities in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo face heightened risks during Ebola outbreaks. Many cannot access health information because it is not available in accessible formats such as Braille, sign language, audio, or easy-to-read materials. Conflict, displacement, discrimination, and weak protection systems further limit access to healthcare, increasing the risk of infection, neglect, and violence.
This project will provide accessible Ebola awareness materials, distribute adapted hygiene kits, train community health workers and humanitarian responders on disability inclusion, establish inclusive community surveillance committees, and support protection case management for vulnerable people with disabilities. Through partnerships with local health authorities and organizations of persons with disabilities, the project will ensure an inclusive Ebola response.
The project will strengthen inclusive emergency preparedness by empowering organizations of persons with disabilities, improving access to health services, and promoting disability-inclusive practices within local Ebola response systems. Communities will become better prepared to protect vulnerable populations during future outbreaks while reducing discrimination and improving participation, dignity, and resilience.
