Our recent training program for 50 farmers living near the national forests in Lamphun Province yielded five farmers ready to pilot the new Aom kiln.
Thanks to a grant from Iron Software, we now have 25 Aom kilns ready for field testing. Interest is growing among both farmers and rural development organizations.
The units are portable, affordable, and produce both biochar and wood vinegar, making them an attractive option for smallholder farmers.
Now that the burning ban has ended, our team is back in the field producing biochar using our flame-cap troughs.
These systems help manage the large volume of tree waste generated by fruit orchards in Phrao District while preventing the smoke that would otherwise result from open-field burning.
Our standard trough kilns received a makeover as well.
We redesigned them with a squarer profile to improve combustion efficiency when using tree branch feedstocks.
We have also added additional monitoring equipment to support the updated CSI biochar standard and to test the Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring system being developed for the Aom kiln.
The slow adoption of biochar by Thai farmers has been well documented.
However, rising fertilizer costs and growing awareness of the long-term impacts of chemical inputs on both soil health and personal health are beginning to change attitudes.
We are making another concerted push in Phrao, starting with meetings with village chiefs and community leaders before reintroducing biochar training to local farmers.
Aom continues to be invited to speak at important events that are helping raise awareness of biochar and its role in sustainable agriculture.
At last week's Chiang Mai Breathe Council meeting, which focused on the vision of a "Livable Chiang Mai".
We are pleased that the Chiang Mai Provincial leaders at the meeting expressed strong interest in our work and will visit Warm Heart in July to see our programs firsthand.
She was also a panelist at the Climate Futures APAC Summit 2026 in Bangkok, where she discussed the operational and verification requirements for carbon removal projects and the challenges of generating carbon credits in today's evolving carbon markets.
Thank you for supporting the research, training, and field testing needed to bring practical biochar solutions to farmers.
Your generosity allows us to continue refining these technologies, reducing agricultural burning, and helping farming communities improve their soils, livelihoods, and environment.
With gratitude,
Dana, Michael, Evelind, and The Warm Heart Biochar Team
