Summary

Wildlife ACTive is a Whatsapp Group managed by our ground team. Think interesting facts, images & videos, animal behaviour, bush quizzes on tracks and signs, bird song and endangered species management interventions. Join for just $10 per month. These funds go directly to our Emergency Response Fund (ERF). Our ERF allows a rapid emergency response to save endangered species in serious danger of being killed. Please help us to save them. (Option to support our ERF without joining Whatsapp too).

Challenge

Endangered and priority species in South Africa are facing an imminent threat from poaching, Human-wildlife conflict, habitat fragmentation and disease - this results in dire decreasing population numbers and an increasing need for emergency responses to life-threatening events. Human-wildlife conflict needs to be managed and as wildlife cannot migrate freely due to habitat fragmentation, relocations between protected areas are necessary for maintaining genetic diversity.

Solution

We have a Community Conservation Program and a Human-Wildlife Coexistence Program. These projects serve to strengthen trust and collaboration between reserves and local communities. Wildlife ACT develops programs within surrounding communities to support biodiversity conservation and socio-economic development. Our aim is to change community attitudes towards wildlife (predators in particular) to ensure their survival and sustainability. But, until then, our ERF is essential to threat response.

Long-Term Impact

KZN meta-populations are crucial to the national/international gene pool. It is essential that we do not allow any local extinctions (like the White-headed vulture breeding colony did in 2023) to occur. Our ERF work is vital to protecting these populations from becoming locally extinct. We hope that our Community Conservation and Human-Wildlife Coexistence Programs will have a positive impact on young minds. In the mean time our Emergency Response Teams need to remain on their toes.
