In Mwenga Territory, South Kivu, DR Congo, older people are being left behind as rural families move to cities in search of survival. This project will protect vulnerable elders through community awareness campaigns, local dialogues, and village-led action that discourages rural exodus, strengthens food security, and restores hope. Your donation helps keep families connected and supports dignified aging in rural communities.
Every week, more families leave Mwenga Territory for Bukavu, hoping to escape poverty. Marie, a 74-year-old widow from Wamuzimu, watched her children leave one by one. Today she struggles to find enough food and often spends days alone. Her story reflects a growing crisis across Mwenga: rural exodus is increasing hunger, food insecurity, loneliness, and malnutrition among older people, threatening the future of entire rural communities.
This project will organize village awareness campaigns across Wamuzimu, Basile, and Lwindi, bringing together elders, youth, community leaders, and local families. Through public discussions, practical education, and community action, people will better understand the long-term consequences of rural exodus and discover local opportunities to protect older adults, strengthen food security, and build resilient rural livelihoods in Mwenga.
When families remain connected to their rural communities, older people are less likely to face hunger, neglect, and isolation. This project will help build stronger villages where generations support one another, food security improves, and migration becomes a choice rather than a necessity. Over time, Mwenga can become a more resilient community where older adults live with dignity and future generations invest in sustainable rural development.
