Women and girls with disabilities in Northern Nigeria, face heightened risks of gender-based violence, child marriage, and exploitation due to conflict, displacement, poverty, and discrimination. This project will empower 50 women and girls with disabilities through rights education, community advocacy, survivor support, and engagement with leaders to prevent violence and promote inclusion. The project will help create safer communities and protect women and girls with disabilities from violence
GBV remains a critical human rights issues in Nigeria, especially for women, and girls with disabilities, in conflict-affected and underserved communities. The WHO estimates that 30% of women worldwide experience physical and sexual violence in their lifetime, with young women particularly vulnerable. In Guma LGA of Benue State persistent conflict, poverty, and harmful norms heighten their risk of abuse, discrimination, and neglect, leaving them vulnerable and often without social support.
This project will provide education, legal support, and safe spaces for 50 disabled women and girls in Guma, Benue State North-central Nigeria. By raising community awareness, training advocates, and offering direct assistance including psychosocial support, referrals for legal and health services, livelihoods assistance, we empower survivors, reduce stigma, and help prevent future violence. The project will help create safer environments where women and girls with disabilities can live freely.
Empowered disabled women and girls will break the cycle of violence, gain confidence, and become advocates for change. Community attitudes will shift, reducing stigma and promoting inclusion. Over time, safer environments and better support systems will enable more women to live free from abuse and reach their full potential. Trained community advocates continue awareness and referral activities after the project ends. Survivors will gain livelihood skills and economic independence.
