Help ACESWorld empower Haitian parents and teachers to uphold the right of children to be free from violent discipline. Violent discipline is the most common form of violence children experience in Haiti. This project will give 300 Haitian families nonviolent strategies and resources to discipline their children. It will also help them develop an understanding of the long-lasting harm that violent discipline can cause children.
3 /4 children aged 2 to 4 experience physical and psychological violence at the hands of their caregivers in Haiti. It is the most common form of violence experienced by Haitian children. While teaching children self-control and acceptable behavior is important, many caregivers in Haiti rely on violent method to punish unwanted behaviors and encourage desired behaviors. Caregivers often lack an understanding of the harm violence can cause and are not familiar with non-violent methods.
This project provides Haitian schools and families with the tools and knowledge with which to protect the right of children to live free from violent discipline. It will provide a pictorial placard showing non-violent discipline techniques. In addition, we will develop a support network for families by conducting workshops for school and community leaders to encourage nonviolent discipline of children.
Once the materials are developed, translated, printed and community workshops conducted, additional placards can be distributed to families at a low cost. Materials will be available at the schools so that they can show parents how to discipline without violence. Our long-term goal is for future generations of parents who have been reared without violence to raise their children without violence as well, or significantly reducing violence against children in Haiti.
