Help protect children and families from fires in Bukavu. When a devastating school fire claimed the lives of more than 15 children, it became painfully clear how vulnerable families and schools can be. This project brings practical fire prevention education to teachers, families, and communities in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo, helping people recognize hazards, prevent fires, respond safely, and protect lives.
Fire can destroy a family's life in minutes. In Bukavu, the danger is real. Repeated fires, overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and limited emergency resources make it difficult for communities to respond when flames spread. About 700 homes were burned over four months, while a school fire killed more than 15 children. For families already facing hardship and the consequences of conflict, losing a home, possessions, or a child is devastating.
The first line of protection is knowledge. This project will provide practical fire prevention training for teachers, families, and community members in Bukavu. Participants will learn how to identify common fire hazards, prevent fires at home and at school, respond quickly and safely during an emergency, and protect children and vulnerable people. Simple fire-safety protocols will help communities turn what they have learned into everyday action.
A safer community begins with one person who knows what to do. A trained teacher can protect a classroom. A trained parent can protect a family. A trained community member can help a neighbor. By spreading practical fire prevention and emergency preparedness knowledge, this project can create a lasting culture of fire safety in Bukavu and help reduce preventable loss of life and property over time.
