Motorcycle-related road trauma is one of the leading contributing factors to the global road safety crisis, particularly in low-and-middle income countries. In Cambodia, motorcycles make up 85% of the country’s registered motor vehicles, while motorcycle riders accounted for 78% of traffic fatalities. Aiming for long-term road safety improvements across Cambodia, AIP Foundation works closely with the Cambodian Government and international sponsors to deliver effective intervention programs.
In May and July, AIPF and Cambodia’s Ministry of Public Workers and Transport co-hosted safe motorcycle driving techniques workshops for factory representatives under the Policy reform for safe journeys for Cambodian factory workers program funded by the United Nations Road Safety Fund.
The workshop covers topics such as traffic laws, safe-driving techniques and effective pedagogy for driving instruction so that participants could later on deliver technical road safety training to their fellow workers, creating the ripple effect in enhancing overall safety knowledge and skills among the factory workers community.
Another vulnerable group of road users that AIP Foundation works to protect are school children in Cambodia. From July 28-31, 38 key government officials and development partners participated in a four-day Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop on Safe School Zone (SSZ) National Guideline and the International Road Assessment Programme’s (iRAP) Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) toolkit.
This Workshop is funded by FIA Foundation, implemented by AIP Foundation and the National Road Safety Committee (NRSC). Designing this workshop as a collective effort for Safer School Zones, AIP aims to reduce child and youth road injuries and fatalities through a combination of infrastructure improvements, policy development, and capacity building.
“This workshop represents a critical step in strengthening national capacity to improve road safety for children and youth,” said H.E Min Meanvy, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Secretary-General of the National Road Safety Committee.
