Prioritizing Safe School Zones

By Cheyenne Henry | Development Coordinator

Around the world, the benefits of low-speed streets in urban areas is highlighted on streets where pedestrians, cyclists, and others who are most at risk mix with motorized traffic. 30km/h speed limits are at the forefront of the new Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 to achieve the Global Goals of Sustainable Development.

Since 2017, AIP Foundation through its school-based programs has actively advocated for the 30km/h speed limit around school zones in order to safeguard students across the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In October 2023, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport issued guidelines to change the traffic sign, reducing the speed limit traffic sign in school zones from a maximum of 40km/h to 30km/h.

“I extend my appreciation and sincere praise to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport for issuing crucial guidelines. These will contribute significantly to preventing and reducing fatalities and injuries among children, students, and people in and around school zones,” shared Pagna Kim, AIP Foundation Country Director for Cambodia, to the Phnom Penh Post in November 2023.

AIP Foundation will continue to educate, advocate, and invest in the safe mobility of Cambodian students. Visit us here and follow us to learn more about our work and receive the latest updates.
