Continuing the Work of Protection and Restoration

As the financial year draws to a close, we’re proud to share another powerful update from the Daintree Rainforest—this time, one of momentum, meaningful milestones, and a renewed commitment to tackling the challenges that lie ahead.

Over the past month, we’ve seen overwhelming support for our current appeal—the purchase and protection of Lot 8 Idriess Close, a nearly pristine property in Degarra—a remote coastal region just south of Cooktown, nestled beside the Daintree National Park and close to the Bloomfield River. Thanks to the generosity of our community and a matched-giving campaign, we are within reach of our $100,000 fundraising target to secure this incredible stretch of rainforest.

This will be our most northern rescue to date, marking a significant expansion of our portfolio of Nature Refuges. Once secured, Lot 8 will be protected in perpetuity as vital habitat for rare and endangered species including the Spotted-tail Quoll, Spectacled Flying Fox, Bare-rumped Sheathtail Bat, and the Southern Cassowary.

But while this success is a major win for Nature, we are also navigating new and unexpected challenges with another recent acquisition: 110 Cape Tribulation Road

This 30-hectare property in the Lower Daintree region was once sugarcane farmland. It is now at the centre of our most ambitious reforestation initiative yet. Our goal here is to transform 25 hectares into biodiverse rainforest habitat, continuing our work regenerating lowland ecosystems and expanding the protected corridor between national parks and wetlands.

However, we've encountered unforeseen regulatory hurdles. Although the land is no longer actively farmed, it remains zoned for agriculture. The local planning scheme does not currently consider permanent restoration planting (“permanent plantations”) to be a consistent use of rural-zoned land.

As a result, we're now preparing a formal impact assessable development application to move ahead with restoration. While this requirement adds significant complexity, we view it as an opportunity to improve environmental policy at the local level—and to advocate for a future where restoration is not only allowed but actively encouraged.

Importantly, we’ve had encouraging conversations with the Douglas Shire Council, including the Mayor and Councillors. Their recent visit to our native nursery sparked genuine enthusiasm, and we are hopeful that their support will extend to the planning team. In the meantime, we are working with technical experts, policy advocates, and legal advisors to ensure restoration at 110 Cape Tribulation—and future properties—can proceed with long-term protection in mind.

This moment represents a shift in the type of work we must now undertake: not just protecting and restoring land but navigating the regulatory frameworks that determine how and where restoration can happen.

As we prepare our next appeal to support the legal and planning process—and to keep the momentum going on our planting work—we’re more committed than ever to realising a future in which rainforest restoration is recognised as a critical and strategic use of land in Australia.

Thank you for standing with us on this journey. Your support through GlobalGiving helps us go further, reach more land, and protect more rainforest—forever.

For the rainforests!
