Closing 2025 with lots of Reading.

In Mexico, we still face a big challenge in closing the  gap between social, economic and educational differences that exist in our society. 

Literacy and writing is essential to fill in that gap between public elementary schools and private schools. More than 94 % of Mexico´s children attend these Public Elementary Schools. That is why for Proeducacion it is of utmost importance to support its line of action: Reading Enhancement.

In Mexico 40% of students in elementary and middle public schools require priority attention in their reading, writing and reading comprehension skills. (based on Mejoredu, 2023). Also, the Statics given by the MOLEC show us that the annual average of reading in 2024 was 3.2 books per student and the reading population decreased 14.6% in less than a decade, which gives evidence to the theory that there is a decrease in the interest of our young population to read (INEGI 2024).

There is also a GAP in the use of Technology in Information and Communications (TIC), these technologies have become a necessary tool in education. Non the less there is a persistent gap of 53.7% difference between public and elementary schools. 61.9% of public elementary schools do not have internet access  (Mejoredu 2024). This necessity limits learning oportunities for students and creates another gap between rural and urban communities.

This is why in these last months of 2025 we have strengthened our Readaing Enhancement line of action, where we have supported reading enhancement activities in the school libraries we have constructed and furnished within this line of action.

We have also had 4% more volunteering activities, where volunteers read to a group of and create an illustrative scenery for the book they chose. This activity has grown in the last school year semester and we hope it will continue to do so in the next semester of this 2024- 2025 school year.
