Summary

This project will provide social-emotional learning (SEL) workshops to students aged 10-13. Through a dynamic, age-appropriate curriculum, students will learn strategies for emotional regulation, stress management, development of healthy relationships and resilience building, teaching them to face challenges with self-awareness and a positive mindset. By cultivating emotional intelligence competencies, students will gain a stronger foundation for lifelong mental wellness and success.

Challenge

In Puerto Rico, 1 out 5 children between the ages of 3 and 17 suffer from an emotional, behavioral or development disorder, yet only 20% receive professional care. Data shows that 19.5% of teens suffer from depression, 8.7% suffer from anxiety, 17.2% have had suicidal thoughts, and an astonishing 10.1% have tried to commit suicide. Factors such as hurricanes, earthquakes, economic hardship, have worsened the mental health of children and youth increasing cases of depression and anxiety.

Solution

The Socioemotional Learning (SEL) Program is designed to empower students ages 10-12 with the essential skills needed to navigate the complexities of life with confidence, empathy, and integrity. Children who develop these skills early are less likely to experience anxiety, depression, or aggression in adolescence.

Long-Term Impact

Offering SEL workshops to Puerto Rican children has a profound and lasting impact. By fostering emotional awareness, self-control, and empathy, SEL reduces conflict and encourages inclusion, which is vital in communities recovering from economic and social stressors. In the long term, SEL workshops contribute to improved emotional wellbeing, resilience, adaptability, and a greater sense of purpose and self-awareness. This leads to reduced risky behaviors issues in adolescence and adulthood.
