Our project is aimed at promoting proper toilet disinfection and hygiene in vulnerable rural schools. This is done through sensitization and field action. Providing the required toilet cleaning tools, you secure proper hygiene and the wellbeing of children in rural schools. We have supported vulnerable schools with toilet cleaning tools and ensured regular cleaning and disinfection of toilets through health clubs. Over 20 out of 120 schools in rural areas have benefitted from this project.
Our research findings in 8 schools revealed that most rural schools in Cameroon do not have enough toilet cleaning tools and regular cleaning/disinfection is very low (14%). About 17% of girls in public and private schools were diagnosed with transmissible infections and diseases according to data collected from the schools` infirmaries. The Ministry of Public Health reported that transmissible diseases account for 40.7% of the burden of diseases in Cameroon.
According to National Institutes of Health, regular cleaning and disinfection are effective measures to prevent transmissible infections. We provide equipment, which are still insufficient for the large number of schools, perform sensitization campaign, participate in the cleaning of school toilets, and disinfection exercise. For each vulnerable school, we work with school health clubs as our focal points for a long-lasting impact.
Effective toilet cleaning and disinfection reduces the spread of diseases in schools especially infectious epidemic diseases such as cholera, decreases student absenteeism, enhance healthy hygiene practices, and strengthen cognitive development among learners. A well-maintained school toilet will increase the self-esteem and wellbeing of learners and undoubtedly boost their academic performance.
