Mercy & Sharing Welcomes Nono & Fafaille

The story of two little boys lost in the system, who have now found their loving forever home.

No one knows where they came from before they were dropped on the door step of an unlicensed, dilapidated orphanage that was recently condemned as unfit and closed down by the Government of Haiti.

Two little boys that have either forgotten how to talk or simply cannot, are now in the care of Mercy & Sharing.  Three months ago one of hundreds of unlicensed orphanages was closed. The children inside were sorted and dispersed into licensed orphanages.  The healthy and youngest children were welcomed and preparation was made for them to be put into the adoption circuit.  Most likely, some of the older ones had parents somewhere and went home.  But Nono, 2 years old & blind and Fafaille who cannot walk and is somewhere around 8 or 9 years old were not welcome anywhere.

As a result the Ministry of Social Affairs in Haiti called Mercy & Sharing to take the boys.  We let them know that we have room and our medical staff would be waiting to welcome them.  Months passed.  Government officials, worried about how the resignation of the Prime Minister would affect their jobs, were paralyzed.  And then the Christmas holidays closed everything down; no one works the two weeks over the holidays.   Meanwhile the boy who could not see and the other who could not walk, sat or laid quietly accepting food when it was offered and waited. 

Finally on Friday, February 6^th the boys, who had been living in the offices of the "Centre d'affaires Social” in Croix Des Bouquet, came to their permanent home, Mercy & Sharing Village.  

 So many of children are waiting in despicable situations because they've been forgotten or because they are not perfect.  Children with special needs are not wanted in Haiti.  Mercy & Sharing is changing the expectations on their behalf.  We offer care and assistance to mothers who have babies so they don't give their children away.   Children who are not considered "normal" are especially in danger of being discarded.   There is nowhere for them to go when they are abandoned, except Mercy & Sharing. Your heart is the most important place on earth for them right now.

A young boy maybe 10 years old has recently arrived at Mercy & Sharing Village and become part of the children we have promised to care for. He has lived in the mountains above  the Village all of his life. His stiff little body could hardly move.  His mother, would place him under a fallen tree every day before she hiked several miles to a village to sell vegetables.  In a good month she would make $10.  The people in his Village call him "cocobai" meaning not human. The little boy has never worn clothes or seen a doctor other than the witch doctor in the village, who told the village the family is cursed. "There is no hope for this kind of demon possession.”

A month ago we were blessed to have a group of medical experts from Tennessee who hiked that mountain and met this boy.  They specialize in medical evaluation and therapy for disabled children. “Can we help him?” we asked one of the experts,  She took him in her arms and starting examining his limbs.  She looked up, squinting in the sun and said “yes, I think we can”.   That’s all we needed.  Hope.  That’s all he needed.  We made arrangements to get him down the mountain to Mercy & Sharing Rehabilitation and Therapy Center.  Two days later……he took his first steps!
