Last year, when Project Promise was given the opportunity to start rehabbing our dilapidated 2,200 square foot building in downtown Christiansted, the response to our fundraising efforts was overwhelming. Thanks to generous donors like you, the exterior of our building is completed and much of the interior work has begun.
Once completed, this building will be so much more than “just” a home for Project Promise. In fact, we are already making plans for the many ways in which the building will enable us to expand our services beyond our flagship multi-year after-school program.
With your continued supprt, our Building Rehab Project will be completed by the end of September 2022!
Since Project Promise’s inception we’ve been operating out of borrowed facilities, as our building in downtown Christiansted was not habitable.
In April our world was turned upside down when the Humanitarian Experience for Youth surprised us with an offer to provide $25,000 of funding plus seven weeks of volunteer labor to start rehabbing our building. The catch: We had five weeks to raise $50,000 and get the roof replaced, so that the building would be safe for the volunteers to be in.
The community response was so strong that between cash and in-kind donations over $86,000 was raised! This summer seven groups, each with 19 volunteers, got an incredible amount of work done, and the work has been ongoing since then. Electrical and plumbing has begun... Lap siding and doors have arrived... Metal roofing has been installed... and our windows and gutter system are on it's way!
We anticipate the exterior of our building to be completed by the end of February and being able to move into our building, which will also serve as a community center, just in time for the 2022- 2023 School Year.
“Making do” in borrowed facilities has truly been holding us back. As you know, we have a building—a 2,200 square foot facility in downtown Christiansted—it has been sitting empty, because it needed extensive renovations in order to be habitable.
In May, we were given an incredible opportunity to start rehabbing this building. Thanks to many generous donors and a great deal of volunteer labor, our building rehab project has already come a very long way. We’ve replaced the roof, rebuilt the second floor, framed out all of the walls, built the interior and exterior stairs, and much more.
Once completed, this building will be more than “just” a home for Project Promise. It will also serve as a community center with classrooms, a computer lab, a full kitchen, a laundry center, a multipurpose room, office space and more.
