Dear Project of the Month Club Member,
Although Bhutan’s government peacefully transitioned to democracy in 2008, many citizens remain unaware of both their rights and responsibilities under the new, democratic government. Without people’s active participation, Bhutan will remain a democracy in name only.
Our February Project of the Month, Empower Bhutan's Citizens to Engage in Democracy, aims to change that by creating a culture of participatory democracy in Bhutan. The project, managed by The Bhutan Centre for Media and Democracy (BCMD), takes a three-pronged approach that starts with projects that address social problems and “inspire active citizens.” BCMD also facilitates forums to encourage and expand the social discourse on a range of socio-political topics and distributes “resources for democracy” through print, audio, and visual materials on the democratic process.
“I extend our deepest gratitude to the club members for selecting our project,” Kinley C Tenzin, BCMD Programme/Communications Officer, shared. “The substantial contribution we have received is instrumental in propelling our project's objectives forward in the coming years." Kinley explained, "its primary impact will be the expansion of our outreach programmes, enabling us to connect with a broader audience and execute our annual events, such as the Bhutan Democracy Forum 2024.”
