Summer Camp

Summer camp was organised at 174 Academic Support Centres (ASC) in Gurgaon for the Primary and Secondary Nanhi Kalis. It commenced from 2^nd May with an inauguration program at the various ASCs by the Head masters, teachers, Nanhi Kali Gram Pradhan and Nanhi Kali Staff. The NKCs and CAs organised a cultural program for the inauguration, where the ASCs were decorated and the Nanhi Kalis performed various cultural programmes.

A pre-test was conducted for all the Nanhi Kalis by the CAs to gauge the learning levels of the girls. Subsequently, based on the test results, the Nanhi Kalis were grouped into different learning levels Understanding the learning levels of the girls helped the CA in planning lessons, worksheets and stories for them.

The Nanhi Kalis spent the 1^st hour of the summer camp in interesting art and craft, singing, dancing activities and the 2^nd hour in academics. At the end of the summer camp, a post-test was conducted. This helped the tutors in understanding the key lessons that the girls could grasp. The activities undertaken at the summer camp were story reading, storytelling by Community Associates (CAs) and Nanhi Kalis, Teaching Learning Material Making, Art and crafts, drawing competition, singing, dancing, poem recitation, rangoli making, yoga, craft activity- best out of waste, etc. 31^st May was the last day of the summer camp. The Nanhi Kalis enjoyed the summer camp immensely. A lot of hidden talents among the Nanhi Kalis came forward.

CA Training on Life Skill Session

A two days session on Life Skill training was conducted for the CAs at the Gurgaon Nanhi Kali office from 28^th May to 29^th May. It was a Training of Trainers (TOT) module for adolescent girls. The workshop was facilitated by World Vision organization team members Ms Anita and Mr. Bajrang. It was participated by 40 CAs and 5 NKCs. The training workshop covered the following modules: Germination, Awareness of self, Character solution, and Interpersonal relationship. The CAs actively participated discussing and asking questions regarding to the modules. The life skill session was useful for the CAs as it focussed on soft skills and confidence building. The CAs found the training very useful and they decided to train other CAs and Nanhi Kalis.

Annual Workshop Plan

A three day workshop was organised for the Programme Officers (PO) of Project Nanhi Kali in Hyderabad from 11^th to 14^th June 2018. The POs presented their Project location targets for the academic year 2018-19. The discussions covered building different strategies for reducing dropout rates to minimal to having the common understanding on how to effectively prepare the roll out for yellow tablet intervention for 2018-19. The Annual Targets were finalised for the academic year 2018-19 for all the project locations. A standard community engagement plan for all the locations were decided with presentations and interactive sessions. Discussions also took place on the various operational issues and the challenges faced last year and strategies to solve the problems were given.

Primary School NKC Training (TOT- Training of Trainers)

A four days training workshop was organised for the Nanhi Kali Coordinators (NKC) of Gurgaon at Hotel Tivoli Grand Resort in Delhi from 19^th to 22^nd June. The TOT module was for the training of CAs. 32 NKCs participated in the workshop who came from the project locations of Delhi, Noida, Moga and Gurgaon. There were 3 NKCs and 1 senior CA who participated from Gurgaon. The training was facilitated by the National Resource Group (NRG) trainers Noorjahan and Sandhya. The session included the following topics:

Cooperative Learning as an approach
Roles & responsibilities of a CA
Need and importance of screening
Process of screening language & math
Material introduction & ASC process
Lesson plan & weekly plan
CA Review meet & capacity building
Recall (Tracking tool)
ASC documentation

At the end of the workshop the NKCs were competent to train the CAs on their own.

NKC and CA Need Assessment

On 19^th and 20^th June 2018, a need assessment was conducted for the NKCs and CAs of Gurgaon. There were 128 CAs of Primary School and 74 CAs of Secondary School who attended the assessment. Among the NKCs, 8 were of Primary School and 5 of Secondary School. CA Training commenced soon after the assessment.

Phase I CA Training- Primary

The Primary School CA Training was organised from 25^th June to 28^th June at the Community Centre, Sector 15, Gurgaon. It was facilitated by Shabnam, Meena Yadav, Neelam Gupta and Geeta, the Programme Officer and NKCs of Gurgaon.

All the trainees were divided into two groups. On the first day of the training, the trainees were introduced to Project Nanhi Kali and were briefed about the Cooperative Learning approach and the roles and responsibility of a CA. The second day started with a review of the previous year’s screening. It was followed by the topic of the need and importance of screening tool. The description and demonstration of language screening by the trainer and participants were informed followed by the same for Maths screening. The third day began with the introduction of academic materials and the process of ASC. The training also included a complete demonstration of ASC which included lesson plan, TLM (Teaching Learning Material) handling, understanding effective usage of TLM, groups and group leader, classroom management and preparation of weekly lesson plans. The fourth day covered the evaluation process, tracking the learning improvement through ‘RECALL’, monitoring of the ASC and the relevance of ASC documents.

Kit distribution

The kits were distributed to the Nanhi Kalis in a colourful community event in the various schools and communities in Gurgaon in the month of August 2018. The kits were ceremoniously handed to the Nanhi Kalis in the presence of their parents, school teachers, headmasters, village and community dignitaries, Sarpanch, Gram Pradhan (Head of the village), etc. The kit distribution events also had cultural activities performed by the Nanhi Kalis such as welcome songs, poem recitation, group dances, skits on girl education and speeches by Head master/mistress, parents, Programme Officer. In addition, the event was also a great mode to create awareness about the importance of girl child education and sending girls to school.

Health Camp

The Nanhi Kalis reside in rural, semi-rural and urban pockets of the state where very little or no attention is given to healthcare. The society does not know much about the importance of health and hygiene. Our team decided to organise health camps to sensitize the girls, Nanhi Kali Coordinators and the Community Associates. This camp was organised in Surat Nagar on 4^th December 2018 by NKC Hema and Sangeeta in collaboration with Smile Foundation. The objective of the camp was to make everyone aware of their health and body fitness. The camp was also attended by mothers to make sure that they take care of their health and if the mothers are healthy, the whole family is healthy. The NKCs were accompanied with their 5 CAs and the camp was participated by 80 Nanhi Kalis and 40 parents. The health camp included health check-up for the Nanhi Kalis and their mothers- the haemoglobin, weight, blood pressure were recorded. Nutrition counselling was also done and iron tablets along with some other medicines were distributed to build the immunity of the girls.

Another health camp was organised in Aanganwadi, Gurgaon village with the collaboration of Sanskar Hospital. The NKCs Hema and Lali along with 4 CAs were present and together with 2 doctors and 3 lab assistants they did health check-up of 150 Nanhi Kalis and their mothers. 100 Primary school Nanhi Kalis and 50 Middle school Nanhi Kalis participated in the health camp along with their mothers. The camp created awareness on the importance of getting regular check-up done and how timely treatment can prevent a number of long term illness.

Nanhi Kali Sports Meet

An orientation was given to the CAs on 15^th February by the Program Officer (PO) and the Secondary school NKCs on sports for the Nanhi Kali Sports Meet. The CAs were orientated on how to conduct this in their ASCs with the Nanhi Kalis. A race track was prepared on the playground of Sarhaul School and CAs race conducted. High jump was also conducted. The CAs were also instructed to note the height and weight of every Nanhi Kali. On 18^th February, the Nanhi Kali Sports Meet was rolled

International Woman’s day-

International Woman’s day was celebrated on the 8th of March across all the Nanhi Kali Academic Support Centres.The Program Officers, Nanhi Kali Coordinators, and the Community Associates planned various games and competitions such as Chair race for the girls. They also organised an awareness rally on girl child education where the Nanhi Kalis enthusiastically shouted slogans within their community. The mothers of the Nanhi Kalis also actively participated in the awareness campaign and confidently vocalised their thoughts on women’s rights and the importance of sending girls to school. This created positive impact on the community stakeholders and the efforts of the Nanhi Kalis were well appreciated by all. Overall, it was a very successful campaign and a great way to celebrate Woman’s day.

Monthly Evaluation

Monthly evaluation was conducted in all the four locations for all the Primary School girls to understand their learning levels in math and language. This was carried out by the Community Associates at all the Nanhi Kali Centres that helped them gauge strength of the Nanhi Kalis and areas where they needed support

Mothers meeting

The CAs and NKCs organised parents/MAA Samiti meeting at all the locations in Noida in May 2018. The mothers/parents were given orientation on summer camp, fast track classes and discuss other agendas regarding regularity. The team took the opportunity to talk about the importance of education and negative impact of dropouts on overall development. The parents appreciated the efforts and were interested to talk about the academic performance of their wards. The mothers interact with each other and share their experiences. Regular meetings have convinced and changed the mindsets of many mothers in Noida as initially they were not comfortable with sending their daughters to school.

Community Meeting

A community meeting was organised at Bahlolpur school, Noida, regarding the formation of Gram Education Committes (GEC). The influential members of the community including sarpanch (local leader), teachers, members of panchayat, participated in the meeting to discuss the importance of education in the community. Regular community meetings have sensitized the stakeholders on sending girls to school and they are more involved in the project especially the mothers of the Nanhi Kalis.

Learning and Development Workshop

Learning and Development Workshop was held in Delhi from 7^th to 9^th May 2018. The Programme Officers attended the workshop which focussed on team building and management and the usage of various techniques such as meditation, written communication, less usage of phone, etc.

Training of Trainers- NKC Training

From 6^th to 7^th July 2018, the 9 Nanhi Kali Coordinators (NKC) of Kolkata were trained for conducting the Primary School CA Training. The subjects covered were group formation, the games to form groups, the ground rules of a workshop and the exceptions, discussions on the roles and responsibilities of a Community Associate (CA), having a cooperative approach and the training was wrapped up with a summation. The training of the NKCs took place for approximately 6-7 hours per day and was facilitated by the National Resource Group (NRG) trainer Nupur Goswami.

Nutrition Week

The National Nutrition Week was organised from 1^st September to 7^th September along with the parents-CA meeting. The importance of having a variety of coloured vegetables was demonstrated to the Nanhi Kalis and their parents. The Nanhi Kalis also had prepared charts on food chain and vegetables with the help of the CAs and explained on the topic. In many of the ASCs, the Nanhi Kalis with the help of CAs prepared snacks and various healthy tasty food which they demonstrated and later had a feast on them. The Secondary Nanhi Kalis were taught about menstrual hygiene and discussions on having iron-rich food took place. The girls learned the importance of healthy eating habits, washing hands

Project Nanhi Kali- Activity Report

Introduction

Project Nanhi Kali helps educate underprivileged girl children from socially and economically marginalized families living in urban, rural and tribal parts of India. This is a national sponsorship program which provides academic and material support to disadvantaged girls so that they can complete their education with dignity. It is jointly managed by K. C. Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation. The Project has now expanded its area of operations in 10 states covering over 1,54,000 Nanhi Kalis across India.

Academic Support is provided in terms of an extra study class which is conducted either before or after school hours in the school itself through the Academic Support Centre. These classes help to bridge the gaps in learning achievements and enable children to reach their grade specific competency level. The classes are conducted by “Community Associates” selected from within the community with the vision that they would be the local resource to act as friends and mentors to the children and at the same time stroking community interest and proactive action for quality education. The teaching strategy is based on cooperative and reflective learning where the focus is on enabling learning rather than on teaching.

Material support consists of an education kit comprising of school bag, stationery, books, notebooks, set of uniforms, undergarments, shoes, socks and hygiene materials which is ceremonially handed over to every individual Nanhi Kali at a colourful function. It also serves as a platform to sensitize the community on the importance of girl’s education.

The Nanhi Kali team also works with the parents and community at the grass root level to sensitize them on gender equity and hence gradually help change mindsets and attitudes. Parents of the Nanhi Kalis and government school teachers are major stakeholders in this initiative and are an integral component of the delivery mechanism.

In an academic year, three assessments are conducted to boost the performance of the Nanhi Kalis. To keep the donors updated on how their Nanhi Kalis are doing three assessment reports will be shared in a year, First Assessment for the period July to September, Second Assessment for the period October to December and Third Assessment for the period January to March. These reports will show progress in assessment scores for language and maths for primary level Nanhi Kalis. For secondary level Nanhi Kalis, the report will show assessment scores in English and Maths.

Below is a brief description of the activities conducted in some of our locations

Delhi

World Environment Day

World Environment day was celebrated at Sultanpuri, Mangolpuri and Shakurpur in Delhi on 5^th June 2018. The celebrations began with drawings, paintings, poster making with slogans by the Nanhi Kalis on saving the earth, saving trees, go green, etc. The Nanhi Kalis and their mothers also enacted out a play on “Mother Earth”. Other activities such as essay writing, and planting a sapling also took place. In many ASCs, the Nanhi Kalis made paper bags and distributed them and spread awareness to parents, school authorites on protecting the environment and going green. At Sultanpuri, the MLA Mr. Sandeep Kumar provided plants to the Nanhi Kalis to plant at their school.

Self Defence Session

On 7^th June 2018, a self defence session was organised at Mukundpur for the Nanhi Kalis studying in Class 6 & 7. The girls were also provided with bananas and energy drink in the break. The CAs conducted this energetic session and also trained the girls on how to get attention when trapped in any difficult situation and shout for help, to keep a distance between one and the bad guy, to be aware of the people in one’s surroundings and using one’s strongest weapons against the bad guy’s weakest targets and a many more.

International Yoga Day

At Mangolpuri and Sultanpuri ASCs, International Yoga day was celebrated with great enthusiasm from the Nanhi Kalis on 21^st June 2018. The CAs conducted the yoga sessions and spoke about the importance of yoga to the Nanhi Kalis.

Primary CA Training

The Primary CA training was conducted from 27^th to 30^th June 2018 at Shakti Nagar Sansthan and Double Storey School. Around 130 CAs attended the training and each session was interactive and the CAs participated very actively. The training sessions covered the roles and responsibilities of CAs, Screening tool and screening process for Language and Maths, importance of Teaching Learning Material and ASC process, how to prepare lesson plan ,weekly plan, Monthly Evaluation and RECALL, communication skills for strengthening community engagement and liasoning, and ASC documentation. At the end of the 4 day workshop, the best participants were awarded with certificate of appreciation.

Waste Management Session

Ramky Foundation organised a 5 day workshop in August 2018 at Mangolpuri for CAs and Nanhi Kalis of Primary and Secondary classes. The purpose was to develop good habits and awaring others on saving the environment. The sessions were on waste management, segregation of dry and wet waste and eradication of garbage in various ways. The Nanhi kalis and CAs participated with lot of enthusiasm.

Learning and Development Workshop

World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day was observed on 31^st May where the Nanhi Kalis participated in an awareness rally in the community informing the public on the dangers of using tobacco.

Project Report- Nanhi Kali

Project Nanhi Kali provides 360-degree support to girls, referred to as Nanhi Kalis, studying in government schools from Grade 1 to 10. The intervention comprises of the following elements:

Free remedial classes provided at Nanhi Kali Academic Support Centres which are set up within the government school premises. At these Academic Support Centres (ASC), which operate for 1.5-2 hours every school day, trained tutors engage the girls in concept based learning. The tutors, referred to as Community Associates (CA), are selected from the local community with the intention that they will act as friends and mentors to the girls, while encouraging community interest and proactive action for quality education.

The project adopts a unique pedagogy called the Cooperative Reflective Approach which is a concept based, interactive group approach to learning. The value of cooperative learning lies in the way group dynamics are created amongst the Nanhi Kalis in the Academic Support Centres. The girls are encouraged to listen to one another, ask questions, clarify issues and express their point of view on the concepts under discussion. The approach recognises learning as a continuous process that is distinct for each child and focuses on learning rather than teaching.

The Yellow Tablet Revolution, which has recently been launched in the project, comprises of the provision of digital tablets with pre-loaded audio-visual educational content to Nanhi Kalis in secondary school (Grade 6-10). The audio-visual lessons enable better comprehension and recall. Each concept taught is followed by an assessment, and only after the concept is mastered does the next concept unlock. Every girl can log in individually and learn at her own unique pace.

At the primary school level (Grade 1-5), tablets are used by the Community Associates to efficiently track attendance and academic performance of the Nanhi Kalis.

A school supplies kit is provided to every girl annually, thereby allowing her to attend school with dignity. This kit consists of uniforms, personal clothing, notebooks, stationery, a school bag, a raincoat/pullover and feminine hygiene material.

Regular assessments and evaluation of the girls’ learning levels is an integral part of the project. 3 assessments are conducted for each Nanhi Kali, every academic year. The daily attendance of the Nanhi Kalis is also tracked by the Community Associates; if a Nanhi Kali remains absent for more than 3 days, the Community Associate visits the home of the girl to check the reason for her absenteeism.

The Nanhi Kali team works extensively with parents and communities to sensitize them to become collective guardians of the girls. Community Based Organisations are formed across project locations. These organizations provide for a strong platform for awareness building and participation of important stakeholders in the community. Additionally, several sensitization and engagement activities are organised with the objective to change negative mind-sets and attitudes towards the girl child.

Monthly Evaluation

The Monthly Evaluation (ME) was conducted from 20^th August to 23^rd August for all the Primary school Nanhi Kalis in Gurgaon. It was the first Monthy Evaluation of the academic year.

Independence Day

Independence Day was celebrated in all the ASCs of Gurgaon very festively.

Activities such as drawing competitions, group dances and patriotic songs sung by the Nanhi Kalis were carried out in the ASCs.

Noida

Kit distribution

Kit distribution took place in the month of August 2018 in Noida in various schools and communities. The kits were distributed in the presence of school staff and parents and the village dignitaries. Cultural programmes such as group dance, group songs, recitation and skit were also performed in many of the celebrations.

Monthly Evaluation

The Monthly Evaluation (ME) was conducted from 27^th to 29^th August at Noida for all the primary Nanhi Kalis. Since it was the first ME for this academic year, all the Nanhi Kalis and Community Associates (CA) were excited and nervous at the same time.

Independence Day

All the Nanhi Kalis celebrated Independence Day in their respective schools in Noida. Flag hoisting ceremony followed by dance and patriotic songs refreshed patriotism of all the Nanhi Kalis and the Nanhi Kali team and they vowed to achieve quality education through this programme and getting freedom from all barriers and hindrances in the way.

Kolkata

Monthly Evaluation

The monthly evaluation was conducted on 13^th and 14^th August 2018 in all the ASCs in Kolkata where all the Primary Nanhi Kalis had participated.

Independence Day

Independence Day was celebrated with lots of patriotic fervour in all the ASCs in Kolkata. Not only the Nanhi Kalis performed, the CAs and the Nanhi Kali Coordinators (NKC) performed on cultural activities too such as patriotic songs, recitations, dances and yoga.

Mumbai

Independence Day Celebrations

Independence Day was celebrated in Mumbai with all the Nanhi Kalis in their ASCs. There were various competitions organised such as Dance, speech, drawing and greeting card making competitions at the ASC level. The Nanhi Kalis enjoyed the activities organised thoroughly.

Session on ‘Good touch and Bad touch’ organised

The Nanhi Kali team organised a Session on ‘Good touch and Bad touch’ which was conducted by the Police Department, N.M. Joshi Police Station on 16^th August 2018. The session was organised at N.M. Joshi School in Worli, where 3 Inspectors conducted the session. They also showed how to protect yourself using self-defence and how to prevent girl trafficking and abuse. The Nanhi Kalis found the session very enlightening.

Monthly Evaluations

The Monthly Evaluations for all the Primary Nanhi Kalis were conducted on 16^th and 17^th August in Mumbai. While language was evaluated on the 1^st day, the second day was for Maths.

NKC and CA Review Meeting

From 29^th to 31^st August, review meetings were organised for the CAs and the NKCs zone-wise in Mumbai. The discussions were on CA reasonability, Nanhi Kali attendances in Tab, grouping of the Nanhi Kalis, Data Syncing, Timeline, special intervention for Classes IX and X, etc.
