Summer Camp

Summer camp was organised at 174 Academic Support Centres (ASC) in Gurgaon for the Primary and Secondary Nanhi Kalis. It commenced from 2nd May with an inauguration program at the various ASCs by the Head masters, teachers, Nanhi Kali Gram Pradhan and Nanhi Kali Staff. The NKCs and CAs organised a cultural program for the inauguration, where the ASCs were decorated and the Nanhi Kalis performed various cultural programmes.

A pre-test was conducted for all the Nanhi Kalis by the CAs to gauge the learning levels of the girls. Subsequently, based on the test results, the Nanhi Kalis were grouped into different learning levels Understanding the learning levels of the girls helped the CA in planning lessons, worksheets and stories for them.

The Nanhi Kalis spent the 1st hour of the summer camp in interesting art and craft, singing, dancing activities and the 2nd hour in academics. At the end of the summer camp, a post-test was conducted. This helped the tutors in understanding the key lessons that the girls could grasp. The activities undertaken at the summer camp were story reading, storytelling by Community Associates (CAs) and Nanhi Kalis, Teaching Learning Material Making, Art and crafts, drawing competition, singing, dancing, poem recitation, rangoli making, yoga, craft activity- best out of waste, etc. 31st May was the last day of the summer camp. The Nanhi Kalis enjoyed the summer camp immensely. A lot of hidden talents among the Nanhi Kalis came forward.

CA Training on Life Skill Session

A two days session on Life Skill training was conducted for the CAs at the Gurgaon Nanhi Kali office from 28th May to 29th May. It was a Training of Trainers (TOT) module for adolescent girls. The workshop was facilitated by World Vision organization team members Ms Anita and Mr. Bajrang. It was participated by 40 CAs and 5 NKCs. The training workshop covered the following modules: Germination, Awareness of self, Character solution, and Interpersonal relationship. The CAs actively participated discussing and asking questions regarding to the modules. The life skill session was useful for the CAs as it focussed on soft skills and confidence building. The CAs found the training very useful and they decided to train other CAs and Nanhi Kalis.

Annual Workshop Plan

A three day workshop was organised for the Programme Officers (PO) of Project Nanhi Kali in Hyderabad from 11th to 14th June 2018. The POs presented their Project location targets for the academic year 2018-19. The discussions covered building different strategies for reducing dropout rates to minimal to having the common understanding on how to effectively prepare the roll out for yellow tablet intervention for 2018-19. The Annual Targets were finalised for the academic year 2018-19 for all the project locations.  A standard community engagement plan for all the locations were decided with presentations and interactive sessions. Discussions also took place on the various operational issues and the challenges faced last year and strategies to solve the problems were given.

Primary School NKC Training (TOT- Training of Trainers)

A four days training workshop was organised for the Nanhi Kali Coordinators (NKC) of Gurgaon at Hotel Tivoli Grand Resort in Delhi from 19th to 22nd June. The TOT module was for the training of CAs. 32 NKCs participated in the workshop who came from the project locations of Delhi, Noida, Moga and Gurgaon. There were 3 NKCs and 1 senior CA who participated from Gurgaon. The training was facilitated by the National Resource Group (NRG) trainers Noorjahan and Sandhya. The session included the following topics:

  • Cooperative Learning as an approach
  • Roles & responsibilities of a CA
  • Need and importance of screening
  • Process of screening language & math
  • Material introduction & ASC process
  • Lesson plan & weekly plan
  • CA Review meet & capacity building
  • Recall (Tracking tool)
  • ASC documentation

At the end of the workshop the NKCs were competent to train the CAs on their own.

NKC and CA Need Assessment

 

On 19th and 20th June 2018, a need assessment was conducted for the NKCs and CAs of Gurgaon. There were 128 CAs of Primary School and 74 CAs of Secondary School who attended the assessment. Among the NKCs, 8 were of Primary School and 5 of Secondary School. CA Training commenced soon after the assessment.

Phase I CA Training- Primary

 

The Primary School CA Training was organised from 25th June to 28th June at the Community Centre, Sector 15, Gurgaon. It was facilitated by Shabnam, Meena Yadav, Neelam Gupta and Geeta, the Programme Officer and NKCs of Gurgaon.

 

All the trainees were divided into two groups. On the first day of the training, the trainees were introduced to Project Nanhi Kali and were briefed about the Cooperative Learning approach and the roles and responsibility of a CA. The second day started with a review of the previous year’s screening. It was followed by the topic of the need and importance of screening tool. The description and demonstration of language screening by the trainer and participants were informed followed by the same for Maths screening. The third day began with the introduction of academic materials and the process of ASC. The training also included a complete demonstration of ASC which included lesson plan, TLM (Teaching Learning Material) handling, understanding effective usage of TLM, groups and group leader, classroom management and preparation of weekly lesson plans. The fourth day covered the evaluation process, tracking the learning improvement through ‘RECALL’, monitoring of the ASC and the relevance of ASC documents.

Kit distribution

The kits were distributed to the Nanhi Kalis in a colourful community event in the various schools and communities in Gurgaon in the month of August 2018. The kits were ceremoniously handed to the Nanhi Kalis in the presence of their parents, school teachers, headmasters, village and community dignitaries, Sarpanch, Gram Pradhan (Head of the village), etc. The kit distribution events also had cultural activities performed by the Nanhi Kalis such as welcome songs, poem recitation, group dances, skits on girl education and speeches by Head master/mistress, parents, Programme Officer. In addition, the event was also a great mode to create awareness about the importance of girl child education and sending girls to school.

Health Camp

The Nanhi Kalis reside in rural, semi-rural and urban pockets of the state where very little or no attention is given to healthcare. The society does not know much about the importance of health and hygiene. Our team decided to organise health camps to sensitize the girls, Nanhi Kali Coordinators and the Community Associates. This camp was organised in Surat Nagar on 4th December 2018 by NKC Hema and Sangeeta in collaboration with Smile Foundation. The objective of the camp was to make everyone aware of their health and body fitness. The camp was also attended by mothers to make sure that they take care of their health and if the mothers are healthy, the whole family is healthy. The NKCs were accompanied with their 5 CAs and the camp was participated by 80 Nanhi Kalis and 40 parents. The health camp included health check-up for the Nanhi Kalis and their mothers- the haemoglobin, weight, blood pressure were recorded. Nutrition counselling was also done and iron tablets along with some other medicines were distributed to build the immunity of the girls.

 Another health camp was organised in Aanganwadi, Gurgaon village with the collaboration of Sanskar Hospital. The NKCs Hema and Lali along with 4 CAs were present and together with 2 doctors and 3 lab assistants they did health check-up of 150 Nanhi Kalis and their mothers. 100 Primary school Nanhi Kalis and 50 Middle school Nanhi Kalis participated in the health camp along with their mothers. The camp created awareness on the importance of getting regular check-up done and how timely treatment can prevent a number of long term illness.

 

Nanhi Kali Sports Meet

An orientation was given to the CAs on 15th February by the Program Officer (PO) and the Secondary school NKCs on sports for the Nanhi Kali Sports Meet. The CAs were orientated on how to conduct this in their ASCs with the Nanhi Kalis. A race track was prepared on the playground of Sarhaul School and CAs race conducted. High jump was also conducted. The CAs were also instructed to note the height and weight of every Nanhi Kali. On 18th February, the Nanhi Kali Sports Meet was rolled

International Woman’s day-

International Woman’s day was celebrated on the 8th of March across all the Nanhi Kali Academic Support Centres.The Program Officers, Nanhi Kali Coordinators, and the Community Associates planned various games and competitions such as Chair race for the girls. They also organised an awareness rally on girl child education where the Nanhi Kalis enthusiastically shouted slogans within their community. The mothers of the Nanhi Kalis also actively participated in the awareness campaign and confidently vocalised their thoughts on women’s rights and the importance of sending girls to school. This created positive impact on the community stakeholders and the efforts of the Nanhi Kalis were well appreciated by all. Overall, it was a very successful campaign and a great way to celebrate Woman’s day.

Monthly Evaluation

Monthly evaluation was conducted in all the four locations for all the Primary School girls to understand their learning levels in math and language. This was carried out by the Community Associates at all the Nanhi Kali Centres that helped them gauge strength of the Nanhi Kalis and areas where they needed support

Mothers meeting

The CAs and NKCs organised parents/MAA Samiti meeting at all the locations in Noida in May 2018. The mothers/parents were given orientation on summer camp, fast track classes and discuss other agendas regarding regularity. The team took the opportunity to talk about the importance of education and negative impact of dropouts on overall development.  The parents appreciated the efforts and were interested to talk about the academic performance of their wards. The mothers interact with each other and share their experiences. Regular meetings have convinced and changed the mindsets of many mothers in Noida as initially they were not comfortable with sending their daughters to school.

Community Meeting

A community meeting was organised at Bahlolpur school, Noida, regarding the formation of Gram Education Committes (GEC). The influential members of the community including sarpanch (local leader), teachers, members of panchayat, participated in the meeting to discuss the importance of education in the community. Regular community meetings have sensitized the stakeholders on sending girls to school and they are more involved in the project especially the mothers of the Nanhi Kalis.

Learning and Development Workshop

Learning and Development Workshop was held in Delhi from 7th to 9th May 2018. The Programme Officers attended the workshop which focussed on team building and management and the usage of various techniques such as meditation, written communication, less usage of phone, etc.

Training of Trainers- NKC Training

From 6th to 7th July 2018, the 9 Nanhi Kali Coordinators (NKC) of Kolkata were trained for conducting the Primary School CA Training. The subjects covered were group formation, the games to form groups, the ground rules of a workshop and the exceptions, discussions on the roles and responsibilities of a Community Associate (CA), having a cooperative approach and the training was wrapped up with a summation. The training of the NKCs took place for approximately 6-7 hours per day and was facilitated by the National Resource Group (NRG) trainer Nupur Goswami.

Nutrition Week

The National Nutrition Week was organised from 1st September to 7th September along with the parents-CA meeting. The importance of having a variety of coloured vegetables was demonstrated to the Nanhi Kalis and their parents. The Nanhi Kalis also had prepared charts on food chain and vegetables with the help of the CAs and explained on the topic. In many of the ASCs, the Nanhi Kalis with the help of CAs prepared snacks and various healthy tasty food which they demonstrated and later had a feast on them. The Secondary Nanhi Kalis were taught about menstrual hygiene and discussions on having iron-rich food took place. The girls learned the importance of healthy eating habits, washing hands
