Our education officer Junior Komani was driving through a township area when some children waved him over. They had just passed an injured dog lying in a nearby field.
That's where Junior found Gabriel, badly injured and so cold that he was unable to move. He had clearly been the victim of a hit and run and whoever was responsible had just left him there to die.
Gabriel was an intact male and had likely been roaming the area following the scent of a female in season. Junior immediately loaded Gabriel into his vehicle and brought him to our Hospital where he was seen by our on-site veterinarian. The diagnosis was a badly fractured foreleg, several wounds on his small body and of course hypothermia brought on by exposure to the elements. Gabriel had been laying in the field, in the midst of a Cape Town storm for approximately 8 hours before help arrived.
He was stabilised for surgery which took place a short while later and his broken leg was pinned and his wounds were treated. Gabriel was also neutered to ensure that this would never happen to him again.
Gabriel is doing so much better now, his leg is healing well and he has for the most part overcome the terrible trauma that he went through. He is a beautiful, gentle soul and he has crept into all our hearts.
It's no surprise that Gabriel has been adopted! As soon as his leg has healed sufficiently, Gabriel's new life with his new family will begin. Gabriel will no longer be wandering the streets looking for a mate, he will no longer be at risk of injury - either via motor vehicle accidents or male on male agression, he will no longer be at risk of developing any of the serious diseases intact animals face - he will be safe, healthy, loved and cared for - and it's all thanks to you.
Thank you so very much for supporting this initiative. Sterilisation is one of the few tools we have at our disposal to proactively prevent cruelty to and the suffering of animals. Sterilisation also reduces the burden on the animal welfare sector by not only humanely controlling pet populations but also by preventing injury to roaming animals and diseases in intact animals that require expensive treatments.
Thank you so much for being Gabriel's Angel, his life is forever changed by your wonderful act of kindness.
Thank you for your love of animals and for your support of the work of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
Warm Regards
