July 14 is World Chimpanzee Day, a day to celebrate one of our closest living relatives and to recognize the threats they face.
The truth behind those threats is hard to hear. To capture a single baby chimpanzee, poachers usually kill the whole family first. The infant who survives is left orphaned, frightened, and alone. For orphans like these, who have nowhere else to turn, PASA-accredited sanctuaries are there.
This year, you can turn a day of recognition into a day of rescue.
On July 15, GlobalGiving Bonus Day, donations made to PASA through GlobalGiving are matched while funds last. It is one of the best days of the year to give for orphaned chimpanzees, and we hope you will make a gift in their honor.
To make sure your gift is matched, please give once the match goes live at 10:00 a.m. ET on July 15. These funds are available for a limited time only, so give early to claim your match. Eligible donations between $100 and $1,500 made during the campaign will help PASA receive a share of $150,000 in matching funds.
Across Africa, the illegal wildlife trade leaves thousands of chimpanzees orphaned and in need of rescue. Infants are torn from their families, often after watching their mothers killed, and arrive at our sanctuaries traumatized, malnourished, and clinging to anyone who will hold them. Your gift is what meets them there.
With your support, a newly rescued orphan receives the nutritious formula that rebuilds her strength, the expert veterinary care that tends to any injuries she carries, and the patient, around-the-clock comfort that teaches her she is safe again. In time, and because of you, that same orphan begins to heal, to play, to laugh, and to form new family bonds with the other chimps in her sanctuary family.
Some orphans are too traumatized or injured to ever return to the wild, and a sanctuary becomes their lifelong home. Others, through that same care, regain the skills they need to return to the forest. Either way, your gift is the reason they have a future at all.
