PASA's Fight Against Wildlife Trafficking

By Alexandra Reddy and Jenny Botting | PASA Development Team

PASA's Action for Chimpanzees initiative
PASA's Action for Chimpanzees initiative

Your ongoing support plays a pivotal role in enabling PASA and our member sanctuaries to combat wildlife trafficking and rescue and provide care for orphaned primates. Thanks to your contributions, we are making significant strides in protecting chimpanzees, who rightfully belong in the safety of the forest rather than suffering at the hands of poachers and traffickers spurred by international demand. Only by tackling the illegal wildlife trade can be stem the flow of orphaned and abused primates into our member sanctuaries.

Through initiatives like PASA’s Action for Chimpanzees project, we are actively reducing poaching and trafficking across West and Central Africa. This project brings together wildlife sanctuaries, local governments, researchers, and other NGOs to address the trade in endangered chimpanzees. Using a combination of capacity building, field research, public awareness, and innovative scientific techniques, we are employing a multi-faceted approach to reduce the illegal wildlife trade through several different routes.  A recent highlight was a training session held for law enforcement officers in Côte d'Ivoire, aimed at strengthening their ability to fight the illegal wildlife trade. This session brought together forest patrol officers, special unit officers, maritime police, and wildlife officials, all of whom gained invaluable insights into both domestic and international wildlife laws. The training emphasized interactive, small-group lessons designed to equip participants with new methods for detecting and investigating wildlife crimes.

Iris Ho, PASA’s Head of Campaigns and Policy, who attended the workshop, was particularly inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants. She noted, "It is encouraging to see how invested local law enforcement are in tackling wildlife crime. We hope the training will strengthen commitment and ignite cross-stakeholder collaboration to curb trafficking. We have a chance to make a real impact by fostering collaborations like these.”

Your donations are crucial for conducting these important training sessions and building local capacity to protect endangered apes and monkeys. By supporting PASA, you join forces with local wildlife heroes, empowering them to provide greater security for primates and to continue the vital fight against poachers and traffickers.

We appreciate your continued support, which makes these impactful initiatives possible. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the fight against wildlife trafficking and helping to keep chimpanzees and other endangered primates safe in their natural habitats. Thank you for being a part of this crucial effort. Your commitment is invaluable to our ongoing success.
