Jenny's Story: From Despair to Hope

By Alexandra Reddy and Jenny Botting | PASA Development Team

Jenny is now safe at a PASA sanctuary
Jenny is now safe at a PASA sanctuary

While Jenny's journey, our most recent rescue success, began with heartbreaking challenges, it is your generous support that has woven a happy ending into her story. You have helped rescue Jenny and give her a joyful, vibrant future.

Jenny, a chimpanzee in Gabon, has lived through profound hardships. Kidnapped from her family as an infant and sold into the illegal pet trade, she was initially cherished as a novelty pet. However, as she matured and became too large to safely be around people, her life became one of confinement behind bars. The loneliness and trauma she endured in her barren cage were unimaginable.

Her plight worsened when her owners abandoned her, leaving her to fend for herself. Isolated and forgotten, Jenny survived only because a compassionate neighbor provided her with food scraps. Our hearts break to think about what Jenny went through during these dark days, but despite these adversities, Jenny clung to life.

For weeks, possibly months, Jenny suffered alone, in an emaciated and weak condition. Thankfully, authorities in Gabon intervened, ensuring she received the necessary food and medical attention. A PASA colleague found out about Jenny and alerted us to her plight. He then played a crucial role in her recovery, offering fresh vegetables, water, and companionship. He even gave her a stuffed animal, which she immediately embraced, finding solace in her solitude.

However, Jenny was still by herself and was too strong for her temporary cage. She posed a risk to herself and others. It was crucial that she was relocated to a sanctuary without delay for both her safety and her emotional welfare.

Thanks to your support, Jenny was successfully moved to the safety of Parc de la Lékédi, a PASA member sanctuary in Gabon. The window to act was narrow, but your help made it possible for us to leap into action right away.

We’re delighted to say that Jenny’s world has been utterly transformed. She now enjoys the safety and security she deserves, receiving the highest standard of expert care. Soon, Jenny will be introduced to fellow chimpanzees, allowing her to build a new family and form lasting bonds after years of solitude. She will once again roam in lush, forested enclosures - experiencing the joys of freedom and exploration that every chimpanzee should. Your role in this vital rescue has not only saved a precious life but has also sparked a bright future full of hope and happiness for Jenny. Thank you for making such a profound difference.
