The Earth Trust’s pro-health programme for village women moved on to the next villages namely Thulidhalai and Kadanadu of the Nilgiris, India during the period August and October 2017. About 10 women from the Thulidhalai village and 24 in Kadanadu village were taught about the health aspects and given skills training namely tailoring and knitting.
The ET’s team also made follow-up visits to Bembatty and Ithalar villages, which were once recipient of the ET’s pro-health programme. The follow-up visits are made quiet regularly in order to ascertain the impact of the ET’s health and skill development programme.
During the follow-up visits, the ET team observed that Yamini of Bembatty village continued to maintain a herbal garden in her backyard which is home to many herbs and medicinal plants such as Adathoda, Peppermint, Geranium, Yarrow, Feverfew, Thyme, Lippia, Aloevera, Vetiver and Lemongrass. She is using the herbs for common health issues like cold, cough, and fever. The knowledge about the herbal plants and their maintenance were given by the ET team a year ago.
Karthiga of Bembatty is continuing with the knitting activity for her home needs and is enjoying it, thanks to the ET’s training. She is also using the herbal medicines for common ailments.
Similarly, Lathamani of Bembatty village is regular with her breathing and other exercises and is able to feel the freshness throughout the day. She shows keen interest in maintaining her herbal garden, where she maintains herbs such as Lippia, Aloevera, Geranium, Lemon Grass and Vetiver.
The follow-up visit to Ithalar village came to light the benefits of the ET health programme. Janaki, Kalpana, Nivetha and Deepa were some of the trainees with whom discussions were held. They are following the health practices such as breathing exercises, yoga, herbal medicines and are seeing changes in their physical, mental and emotional health.
One fine story was that of Deepa, who is a divorcee. She was in a state of depression and mentally down. The health-skill development programme that she attended and the general counselling that she received helped her turn life to normalcy. She has started to make an earning from the knitting and tailoring and now she looks happy and contented.
Thus the ET’s health-skill development programme continues to make a positive impact to the women in the villages of the Nilgiris by improving their health and livelihood.
